The Village Rot by Heidelberg
Rot is situated in the Rhine valley approximately 19km south of
Heidelberg. The people there once made their living
from farming. Tobacco and asparagus flourished in the favourable climate
and so did rye and wheat. Today it is industry which has been established
in Rot and provides employment to many people.
Meadows and creeks
As children, we spent the long summer days playing or catching frogs and lizards in the Kirrgraben. We also made our first attempts at swimming there, which was great fun, though it is unthinkable in todays terms.
Reeds and Meadows
The meadows were abundant with
grass, which was harvested in summer for hay and stored in the barns as fodder for the cows in winter. Today the reeds
provide a haven for the birds, frogs and lizards.

The lake in St.Leon-Rot is a popular holiday destination for campers and
locals alike, and offers permanent and overnight accommodation.
Swimming, waterskiing, beach-volleyball and sunbathing are among the
activities undertaken there by the holiday-makers.
The storks are back again in St.Leon-Rot and surroundings, after
long years of absence.
