Two hands reached out of the shadows and placed a lamp on the narrow ledge of the window. The solitary light shone out of a dark ship into an even darker void. Its golden flickers gradually attenuated as they reached out into time and space, desperately seeking the soul for which it had been created. But, the journey would stretch through almost ten thousand light years before their spirits would once again be rejoined. Still, the message of immortal love had begun its odyssey.

He was the last to share her spirit; he had been one of the first. So young... eager... responsive... She thirsted for the knowledge that he could share. He knew almost from the beginning that she would constantly be testing her... and his... limits of exploration of their minds and inner essences. Perhaps he was to blame for her over-zealousness... he had let it get out of hand. But, as a teacher, he had learned to rejoice in the explorations of the mind... into the quest for the unknown. She was a student who outgrew her teacher... and who had finally led *him* to a higher level of existence.
Emotion... forbidden to him, yet now mutilating his being. Why had he not understood the gift she was offering him? So many on this ship thought that the only form of love was to be found in the frenzied physical coupling of the flesh... their love was so much more.
In that final meld, her splitting atoms were calling to him... like Circe of old, she was his siren... calling him and his essence to join... the meld would have made it so. If... he had joined her, would their mutual sacrifice have given Voyager even more years in that inconceivable warp jump? Would they be only a few years away from their destination?... Would he and she now be forever one in a new dimension? Yet... the Captain called to him... his old friend, whom he could not leave... whom he could not betray... who needed him.

So, he stands now, before the window, watching the light begin its journey... taking with it... his soul, his love.
My Kes... what could have been... know this, that over thousands of years, throughout the galaxy, I am with you. You are, and always will be, my lux eterna.
