Sunken Spirits

by Arun Raghav

(A search in the Blue…)

I take a deep breath,
And take a dive into the unknown…
Noises of gaiety long lost
Now even the glint of sun fails to penetrate,
an eclipsed visibility,
tranquility grows eerie
depths seem unfathomable
I’ve been holding my breath for what seems an eternity,
Spirits couldn’t be lower, or could they?
A bubble rises from an abyss,
An unknown source of effervescent air,
tiny when born, it rises, keeps rising and grows as it does,
Cruises gracefully against gravity
Delicately dodging the obstacles in its path,
I fail to hold it in my hands,
I fail to breathe it in,
I watch it pass me by,
An incessant journey to the top,
reaches the surface, bursts,
Disappears, leaves behind… a ripple.
I fail to hold it in my hands,
I fail to breathe it in,
yet again,
too timid to go any lower,
too weary to rise back
dangling midway
in a state of hypoxic suspension,
I wait for the next one…
