Mojave Phone Booth Links

The Mojave Phone Booth may be dead in real life, but it is alive and well on the Internet. Happily, most sites created during the time we were fortunate to have it are still up and running.

All links were working as of 12/2/00. Please email me if you find any dead links here, if you would like your page to be listed, or if your listing is erroneous. My aim is to make this the largest and most up-to-date page of links dedicated to the Booth.

Deuce of Clubs : This is the website that started it all! News and commentary on the Booth, trip reports, and hundreds of letters from fans.

Mojave Phone Booth Club : Small but (formerly) lively club on Yahoo! dedicated to the memory of the Booth. Moderated by CargoLAX (famous for PeeWee, a lawn jockey in a remote part of the Landers Desert.) Features an ongoing discussion about how to get the Booth back or establish a new one elsewhere. Join in - let's get the dialog going again!!

MojaveDesertPhonebooth : A similar but less-visited discussion group on Egroups. It started off strong when it was founded in March 2000, but traffic has dropped to a trickle since the Booth was removed.

mojave-phone-booth.com : A site selling T-shirts and other Mojave Phone Booth collectibles to help save the Cima Cinder Mine, which, like the Phone Booth, was a victim of NPS overmanagement. Also contains a link to "The Conspiracy Song.".

Mike McCormack's Road Trip : Mike heads up to the Booth, stopping at Calico on the way, and shares some very nice pictures with us.

L.A. Times Article, 9/18/99 : This is the article that got Mike (and me) going on the Booth.

MojavePhoneBooth.com : Little-maintained site, but worth a look. "Dial it and they shall come" is an interesting travelogue, in video and pictures, of a trip to the Booth from Santa Barbara. Other links say they will be operational within 24 hours, but they have said that for at least a year!

Cinder Peak Phone : Nicely done site named after the Booth's official Pac Bell name. Features a trip report and interesting links to general desert and telephone information sites. "Phone Trips" was really interesting!

Fiercely Independent Films: Producers of an award-winning short film centered around the Booth, "Dead Line." The film used to be able to be seen in its entirety on ifilm.com, but a search today yielded nothing!

Andrea Wolfe's Page : "Open all night!" proclaims a small picture of the Booth. Andrea, a New Yorker, features pictures and dialogue of a trip to the Booth on 7/1/99. Andrea was featured on an NBC Nightly News segment on the Booth.

Mojave Trip to the Lonely Phone Booth : The group of Abbey Webbers known as the "Monkey Wrench Gang" take a trip to the Booth. I have had the opportunity to camp out with them since and they are a really interesting and diverse bunch!

The 8th Natural Wonder of the World! : Great pics, including (how appropriate for this time of year) the Booth and Phone decked out in holiday lights!

It's Out There : A surreal account of an ill-fated mission to drive out to the Booth and hang it up. But was it really off the hook?

Mission: Hang It Up : A very similar premise to "It's Out There", (an 'off-hook' Mojave Phone that really was out of order) but with more pictures.

mcfame : A follow-up to Mission: Hang It Up.

The Mojave Phone Booth Trip : Nicely done site chronicling Simbajak's visit to the Booth, which included, among other things, a telescope!

Phone Home: Buddyhead writes a small article about the Booth.

E.T. phone home : Lara Hartley, a desert photojournalist, shares her thoughts on the Booth (and Godfrey Daniels!)

.Mojave Desert Phone Booth (Monday, 13 March 2000) : Another interesting account. At least I'm not the only one who noticed the cows out there!

Video Road Trip to the MPB : Nice site from Cal State L.A. featuring RealVideo of a 12/99 road trip to the Booth. I just wish they'd put up the audio of the calls!

Garot's Travels : Several hi-res pictures of the Booth.

Cicciolina’s Virgin Pilgrimage : One of the last trips to the Booth, 4/21/00. Dan Candela visits the Booth on a crotch rocket (tries to, anyway!)

Mexico to Las Vegas via the Booth : Dan and Cicciolina's experience from the point-of-view of the guys who gave him a ride in the back of their truck.

Busses by the Booth : David and Nikki, and their busses Bluto and Wendelin, meet near the booth and the humans hike 6 miles to answer it. I almost got to meet them in person! (I'm the Doug they referred to.)

A Moment of Silence : Beti Tomsic puts a very interesting philosophical spin on the phenomenon of the Booth.

Tom Brokaw's Segment : This otherwise blank page contains a low-bitrate streaming video of NBC Nightly News' fall '99 segment about the Booth. It's hard on the eyes and ears, but viewable nonetheless.

THE Mojave Phone Booth : Simple page with one photo. "One of the mysteries of the ages - why???"
