Other birthdate given as 1634. Was a Knight, Lord of Varennes, of Tremblay and many other places and Governor of Trois-rivieres in 1669. Arrived in Canada in 1665 as a lieutenant. Soon he was engaged in expeditions against the Ontario Indians. He was officially named Governor of Trois-Rivieres by the King on June 6, 1672 to succeed his father-in-law.
Rene Gaultier received a land grant of 28 arpents on the St. Lawrence River on its southern bank a few miles from Montreal. The fief was called La Verenderie Seigneury and also "La Gabelle."
The census of 1681 shows at Trois-Rivieres "M. de Varannes, Governor, 45 years, his wife, 30 years, children: Rene, 10 years; Pierre, 5 years, and Jean, 2 years."
Pierre Gaultier: Rene's son, Pierre, in 1712, was a lieutanant in a regiment from Brittany. In an appeal for help from the King, he mentions that he had taken part in three campaigns against the English in Canada and three campaigns in France. In the Battle of Melplaque he suffered four sabre cuts and a shot through his body. He was a jprisoner of war for 15 months. He returned to canada and he and his wife had six children: Jean Baptiste, Pierre, François, Louis-Joseph, Marie Anne and Marie Catherine.
In 1731 Pierre began several explorations of what is now the Western United States and Western Canada. He was accompanied on one or more of his trips by his nephews and all of his sons. They founded the City of Winnipeg. In 1743 they discovered the Rocky Mountains (???). Canada has honored its great explorer with monuments and a large area in the Province of Quebec has been designated La Verendrye Park.
On December 5, 1749, Pierre died and was buried in St. Ann's Chapel in Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal.
