THE GIFT OF FEAR by GAVIN de BECKER: I can't recommend this book strongly enough. So hard to summarize it, because its topics include dating, child abuse, abnormal psychology, socialization skills, cultural mores, the perils of celebrity and our increasing isolation in a high-technology society. By addressing the particular risks faced by women and children from human predators, Gavin de Becker sheds light on a host of other phenomena. To me, it doesn't matter what gender you are or what stage of life you're at -- male or female, high school student or retiree, there's something in this book for you. Something important.
I've often heard the question, "What book changed your life?" and in the past I never knew how to answer. Now I do. This book changed my life. And others will be able to say that this book saved their lives.

ENCYCLOPEDIA MYTHICA: a compendium of legends and myths from various nations and histories. Arthurian, Greek, Japanese -- it's all here.

MORPHEUS: It's all about file sharing, until we're enjoined from doing so.

THE CHICAGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Background on the greatest city in the world. Not that I am biased.

THE SAFE HAVEN LAW: This Sacramento Bee article discusses the little-publicized legislation in California that allows women to drop off unwanted newborns at hospital emergency rooms, no questions asked. Every year, babies die at the hands of terrified young mothers who fear the discovery of pregnancy. This law saves lives, but the people who need it most don't know it exists.

THE MEMORY EXHIBITION AT THE EXPLORATORIUM: All about how we catalog and retrieve information. Warning: involves sheep brains and multisyllabic words.
