Walker's Cay, Abaco, Bahamas - 1999
Music is Jimmy Buffet's Off To See The Lizard
I've been on several fishing trips to Walker's Cay, mostly traveling there by boat, but in 1999 we went by seaplane. It was a great experience, leaving Ft. Lauderdale June 3rd, 1999, via Chalk's seaplane service. Forty-five minutes in the air and we were splashing down in the clear waters off the little island, floating toward the ramp that would take us to the customs booth. My wife and I had our niece with us since we were bringing her for a short visit on her parent's boat. They had already been in the Bahamas for about a week and they knew she'd have been bored for the whole trip. Accompanying her gave us a chance to visit for a few days too!
My brother-in-law and I are avid fishermen so we decided to go fishing the first day. We were lucky and caught a nice black fin tuna, about 28 pounds, that fed us for the rest of the trip. Some of his friends were participating in a fishing tournament on the island and brought in a lot of fish. Everyone posed under the Walker's Cay weigh-in scales to show off the great catch of the day and we all ate hearty that night!
The major allure of Walker's is the fishing and, if you don't have your own boat, you can charter a fishing boat. Besides fishing we found other ways to amuse ourselves like relaxing at the pool or reading a good book on the boat while docked at the marina. We also took a few walks around the island to admire the scenery and walk on the small beaches. There was a nice chapel on the island with pretty stained glass windows and some shops where we bought a few things. The girls went out snorkeling one day while we fished and, for the adventurous, there is a Shark Rodeo diving trip. We skipped that one!
We cruised to a nearby uninhabited island, Double Breaster Cay, to swim and have lunch one day. The water was fairly shallow and there was a nice beach. Despite some dark clouds coming towards us, we had a sunny day and a nice swim in the gorgeous blue water. We were kept company by a little dog from a nearby boat and some big manta rays swimming by.
Our niece had a great time and so did we. It was a very relaxing way to spend a few days. The next year my brother-in-law and I went back by boat. I wanted my two girls to get the "Bahamas experience" so we flew them in on the seaplane to meet us there. Visit the next page to see the details of that trip in June 2000.
