Chokhamela was doing the work of removing the dead animals from the village. He was a great devotee of Panduranga. Namdev Maharaj fully supported his devotion to Vitthal. He asked others questioning Chokhamela's right of devotion to stop their nonsense.

A sugar-cane is black and not so good-looking. Will someone avoid enjoying its sweet juice for this reason? A river moves in a zig-zag direction and one who cannot swim may drown in the river. But the banks of the river are safe for such person if he wants to use the water of the river. So he need not be concerned with the form of the river. Similarly Chokha Mela may not be good-looking, may not belong to the upper-caste. But that does not mean that his mind is not pure.
