Dickens' second novel was published in monthly parts from 1837-39. In contrast to the comedy of The Pickwick Papers, Oliver's story is set in the underworld of poverty and criminality which existed in early Victorian London but which few were willing to acknowledge. Dickens was an ardent social reformer and the book drew attention to the dreadful conditions in which so many of London's poor lived. Oliver Twist was written at 48 Doughty Street, London, his residence from 1837 to 1839 and now a museum and the headquarters of the Dickens Fellowship.
