It may seem
strange to us now when the Government is expected to pay for everything
at all times but in the past people were a lot more self sufficient.
-
Many soldiers who went to the Boer War paid their own passage on the
ships.
- Many pieces of military equipment was purchased by town or city
fund raising committees. This went a long way past running fund raiser
to send the troops some luxury items like soap and cake.
- The Australian
Flying Corps actually had some of it's planes privately funded. Some of
the hospitals were privately funded, not for profit, as there was no
charge but as a patriotic duty.
- Some whole units were privately funded
in colonial times and thousands of men served in Volunteer Units where
the pay as NIL and you had to provide your own horse.

In the Second World War there was not
quite as much civil fundraising but there was still a lot. The
Australian Red Cross and the Victorian Lawn Tennis Association were just
two of the groups to issue medals or badges that had a military
connection, for fund raising purposes. The funds were for support of the
troops. |
