I woke up again in a cold sweat. Small beads of liquid fear darted off my brow, as I inhaled sharply to get rid of the remains of the nightmare. It had happened again, another sleepless night with plaguing visions. I didn’t know how much more of this I could handle.
It was the evil; it was as pure and simple as that. Evil wanted me, me of all people! But nonetheless I was the being that taunted it. I alone was the human that would quench its never-ending hunger for life and energy.
The voices that still lingered in my head pounded; it was as if they were hammering something into my mind, making it perfectly clear to me that I was next. The first and the last, the only.
I had gotten out of my bed, careful no to disturb the small creature next to me. I carelessly grabbed at clothing that were strew all over to place in the untidy manner that I was so accustomed to living in.
I tiptoed out of my room, careful not to disturb anyone. I slipped out the front door, walking out of my home, just wandering off into the streets. I had to get out and clear my mind, a pitiful attempt at erasing my memory. But it wasn’t in my head; I knew that for a fact. It was all around me, smothering me like a blanket.
At soccer practice, it would hang over me like a dark cloud. Walking home, it would hit me in the gut. It surrounded me like air, and with every breath I took, I knew it was entering inside me, basically making itself comfortable.
”What the hell is wrong with me?”I wondered aloud, gently pounding my hand into the wall next to me. I lightly shut my eyes, trying to breathe steadily, for in the last few seconds everything went cold. The air as frosty as ice and as piercing as a dagger. I trembled, sharply hitting the ground, my knees coming in contact with the pavement sending a dull ache through my legs.
The bell tower that loomed over Odaiba suddenly went off. Twelve distinct booms, signaling midnight. It was midnight again; like clockwork I was outside at midnight again. It was as if I was supposed to be there at that time every night, just waiting for something. Someone…
My heartbeat suddenly went irregular, thrashing so fast that I screamed out in pain, clutching at my chest. My eyes bulging out of my head as I cried transparent tears of agony. Nobody awake to help me. Nobody around me to assist me in a time of need. I was alone, all alone in pain.
And my eyes snapped open again. I exhaled, letting my eyes adjust to the pitch-blackness of my room. Moonlight streaming in, enveloping everything in sight and casting eerie shadows. Nighttime, the only time I was truly scared to be in my house.
It had happened again. I could always swear I was somewhere else, but then, I ended up back in my room. It was peculiar. Chibimon was nestled closely to me, warming an area of my chest that was frigid. In fact, my whole body felt fever-ridden.
Why was this happening to me? I could honestly say I had no idea. Was it all a dream? Was it a horrible dream that corruption was stalking me or was it reality? Too many questions, there were just too many questions that I couldn’t answer.
I let my head carelessly hit my pillow, allowing sleep to slowly succumb to me. I hadn’t gotten a stitch of rest in the last few weeks, and my body was screaming out for me to get some sleep. God knows I need it.
My mind slowly started to drift off, fogging over with nothingness. But there was still something that dawdled in my room… the smell of roses?
”Hey Daisuke.” Kari smiled as she softly brushed her lips against mine. Her amber eyes smiling down warmly on me as she took a seat next to me. “How are you doing? Are your nightmares gone?” she asked concerned as I smiled lovingly at her.
”No, the dreams still haven’t gone away. But they’re getting weirder and weirder Kari. Every time, I can swear that I’m somewhere I’m not, but it’s always midnight.” I sighed deeply, squeezing my eyes shut, missing the nervous look from my girlfriend.
”Well I know things are going to get better. Believe me. Remember what Gennai said Daisuke, and I know you’ll be fine.” she encouraged me as she kissed my cheek and ran off.
How could I forget what he said love? ‘Things are not what they appear to be.’ Those were his exact words. None of us exactly understanding what he was talking about, but we still all managed to smile and nod.
But it wasn’t what the elder man said; it was how he said it. His small, squinty eyes spying each of us questioningly. I still remember the look her gave Kari and Ken. It almost looked regretful maybe even a little terrified. But then when I wrapped my arms around her, he looked as if he were going to have a heart attack. Then after he called them both aside. Neither one will tell me exactly what they talked about, so I dropped it.
”Hey Daisuke!”Tk called out, smiling widely as he came into view hand in hand with Miyako. Both were smiling as he waved. I threw them a confident smirk as they stopped dead in front of me.
”What’s up TE?”I joked as he rolled his eyes. Miyako giggled, still not tiring of the ongoing joke we both continued. Well, at least me anyway.
”Absolutely nothing. Just got the daylights bored out of my by my geography teacher.”He cleared his throat. “We live on earth, while I was transported here by my fellow peers of colony L-7, blah blah blah.”
”Cute, in a juvenile kind of way.”Miyako smiled, leaning up to kiss her tall boyfriend. But whatever was said next was completely drown out to me. The only thing my brain was picking up were the faint traces of roses. The exact same smell that was in my dreams.
”Daisuke are you all right?”Tk asked suddenly, breaking away form Miyako, and rushing over to me. I began to slip, suddenly blacking out, losing consciousness. All I could recall were Tk’s strong arms wrap around me, pulling me back up. Then, nothing at all. Only the now distant smell of roses.
Normal POV
”Why are you doing this to him still?”Ken asked, gazing directly at Kari. His cold lavender eyes heated with rage as he looked over at Dai briefly then turned his attention back to her. He was still lying in a type of coma, totally unaware of the world around him.
”Because Ken, this isn’t fair. Somebody screwed up big time, and all of us got the short end of the rope. I know that this isn’t supposed to happen. I know that it’s not fated to be, but so help me God I will do everything in my power to keep it this way.”She hissed painfully, squeezing onto Daisuke’s hand as she brushed away tears with her free one.
”Kari, it won’t work that way!”Ken spat, grabbing her and yanking her from the chair she was in. “You know as well as I do that we can change this! We can make it right again! You know what the consequences will be if we can’t!”
”Damn it Ken, I don’t want them to work out! I have everything I ever wanted here, right now! Why would I want to change it! I’m perfectly happy here with him!”
”But it wasn’t supposed to be like that Kari! What about me? Did you even stop to think about that? Don’t I deserve to be happy too? You saw what happened to me because of this mistake. I suffered worse than all of you put together and then in the end I get nothing? Do you think that’s fair?”
”Granted, you got screwed. Everybody here did! None of this is real Ken! Did you ever consider that? But I like this reality! This reality is beautiful and perfect! Every Digidestined is happy!”
”Except for me.”Ken reminded her, sighing deeply. “Kari, I know that this is painful, but think about what will happen to him if you keep this up. Gennai told us Kari. Don’t you remember what he said will happen? It’ll come after him, and it won’t stop until he’s theirs. Look at what happening to him already! The nightmares, the fits, the fainting spells. He’s slowly giving in Kari, and sooner or later you know he’ll be dead. And neither of us want that.”
”He’s mine here. I can protect him here. And you will too. You wouldn’t let anything happen to him, I know you.”She stuttered almost wincing as the words left her mouth.
”But he’s supposed to be mine.”Ken whispered, walking over to him, clutching onto his hand. “I know this is painful. I really do. But we have to set things back to the way they were supposed to. Or at least tell him.”
”No!”she bit, suddenly flashing angrily at him. “We will not, we will never, do that!”her always-peaceful eyes were replaced with ones of pure contempt and menace.
”Why Kari? What are you so afraid of?”he inquired, brushing away a piece of his inky hair. “I know it’s not what should have been, so what is it?”
”You Ken.”She snarled. “Everything that’s happening is because of you! Everything would have been perfect, it you hadn’t gotten in the way!”
”As if you’re one to speak Miss. Kamiya! If you hadn’t have gotten sick, then absolutely none of this would have happened! They would have gone to the Digiworld with you, and the whole search wouldn’t have gotten mixed up!”
”Mixed up? Where the hell did that come from? Ken, this is completely your fault, and if anything happens to him, I swear to God there will be no place in this world or the other, where you can hide!”she threatened, turning her attention back to her sickly boyfriend.
”I did not mess this up Kari! You were supposed to be me! Why can’t you realize that? I was supposed to be the one born of light!”
”Stop saying that!”she yelled loudly, slamming her fist into the small table, causing the water to rattle slightly. “I am the Child of Light! I am happy here! I do not want to go back to the way it was supposed to be!”
”Then he’ll end up paying the price Kari.”Ken said slowly. “When he’s crossed that thin line between good and evil, it’ll be your fault for just sitting back and doing nothing. But I swear, I will make sure you suffer just the way I am.”He snapped, sauntering over to the object of his affections and grief. “I promise you Dai, I won’t let it get to you.”He swore, reaching over to touch his face, but stopped halfway there and yanked his hand back cringing slightly.
”Just leave Ken.”Kari stated focusing back on the boy that was unconscious. “And for your information, I’m not scared of anything. He’s here to protect me and love me.”She almost smirked sadistically. “You can’t help him, only I can.”
Ken just sighed, walking out of the room, leaving the couple alone. “Or so you think Kari. Or so you think.”He smiled, pulling out his Digivice. “Things worked out for you here, but they’ll work out for me once I’m through. He doesn’t belong to you at all. Nobody belongs together here. But I’ll fix it.”He vowed. “For all of us. I’ll make us rightfully happy. Even you Kari. Even you.”
Dai’s POV
”Hey there. Welcome back.”Kari greeted me as I opened an eye. My body felt as if it had went several rounds with a professional boxer. “We missed you.”She whispered leaning down and kissing my lips sweetly.
”You had us worried Motomiya.”Miyako chuckled as she approached me, giving me a giant bear hug. My back spasmed as her arms came in contact with my skin, sending hot explosions of pain recoiling through my body. It was so painful I couldn’t even make a sound.
”What happened to me?”I choked, coughing slightly. Now that I think about it, it’s not my body that hurts, it’s my bones. The very center of my bones ached.
“We don’t know. Nobody does actually.”Tk spoke. “You just collapsed in school, and you kept screaming. But the oddest part of this whole thing is that you kept muttering something, but it was in another language or something. I’m betting gibberish, but still.”
Kari suddenly coughed, excusing herself for some water. Ken, who was slinking in the shadows exited as well, sporting what resembled a slight smile, but I couldn’t exactly tell.
“How long have I been out for?”I asked, rubbing my eyes with the palms of my sore hand. I don’t know why, but the pain felt natural to me now, as if I had lived with it forever or something.
“Ten years…”Tk jested again, making his voice seem deeper. “No, like, four hours, five hours. I lost count man.”
“Thanks.”I sighed, leaning back slightly. Something wasn’t right here. Something felt unnatural. But I couldn’t figure out what it was exactly what it was yet.
XXX’s POV
“What’s going on master?”a smaller Digimon asked, shuffling its way over to me. His large purple eyes were masked in darkness, and well concealed under his spiky eyebrows.
“They have assisted me. Nothing is wrong. I was wondering which one it is, but I never could figure it out, that is, until now. There, the object of the ex-Emperors affection.”I spat, tucking my long hair behind my ear. “If they only knew.”
“Knew what master?”it, asked again, slowly eating away at my nerves.
“Two of them know the truth. The other four are still piecing things together. But only the girl really knows what’s going to happen, and she’s trying to avoid it at all costs. But it won’t work, because it’s already started.”
“What are you talking about?”it inquired, scooting closer. I detested vermin that was beneath me, but I need its help.
“Thirty five years ago, a group of children were mysteriously transported here. They were dubbed the Digidestined by all the elders of the land and they were given a great power. Sadly, they were all young and thoughtless; they really had no idea how to harness this power. So the elders made devices called Crest and Tags, the Digivice was pre-given. Now, these children fought hard to defeat the evil of this land, but sadly, they failed and they all ended up dying. Skip ahead twenty-three years and you get the new Digidestined. They were wiser than the previous batch, and they actually accomplished what the first set couldn’t.”
“Those are the Digidestined I know, right master?”
“Yes. But you see they were missing one of their members. That was the great search for the 8th child. But they made an error in the prophecy. The 8th child wouldn’t be born of the light and destroy the evil, the 8th child would be born of evil and destroy the light. But since the Digidestined didn’t know this, they took on the girl, Kari, as the 8th child. That was a horrid mistake that ended up re-writing destiny. They were all supposed to die, just like the previous children, but six were to live. Two technical older ones and four new ones.”
“The new Digidestined.”
“Exactly! But because of this error, and the re-written history, the children became confused. At birth their future was already foretold, and each were given an order. That was to be their death order. 8th, 9th and 10th were the only ones that suffered because of this. But to make a long story short, what we perceived to be a reality, was all an error. Evil was handed out to the wrong child and the true child of darkness didn’t even realize it. But now, destiny is correcting the mistake, and shortly, everything will be as it was supposed to be.”
