Papa Roach-- Last Resort
Daisuke's POV
"You got guts kid." the tattooist said as he placed the needles in a large cup of hot alcohol. "I didn't even dare go near a tattoo parlor until I was about five years older than you!"
"Whatever." I muttered not caring. I thought that it would have hurt a lot more than it did, but the pain was minimal.
"Nice design though. Very popular." he said, as he took a large strip of white sloth, and taped it to the skin on my hand.
"I know." I said smiling mischievously. "I was the designer. You tagged my boys!" I said proudly.
"You got talent kid." he said sitting back. "I can tell tight now that you'll go down in history!"
"I hope." I said as I flexed my hand. It was burning a lot, but it didn't hurt. I jumped off the chair, and grabbed the leather jacket that was draped over the corner of the table with large beakers of colored ink.
I threw down a 20-dollar bill, and walked out of the shop. The cool breeze hit my face as I exited. I had a long walk back to my place, and the sky was getting darker by the minute.
"Hey Dai! Wait up!" I heard a shrill voice call out my name. It sent shivers up my spine. Kari.
"Hey!" she said running next to me. "I haven't seen you in school in a while. Are you okay?"
"Yeah." I said in the most reassuring voice possible. "I've just been a little queasy, that's all."
Kari looked at me with her warm eyes. "Dai, is it because of what happened?"
"No." I interrupted her quickly. "It's not because of that."
"Oh." she said relieved.
"So." I said carelessly. "What you been up to?"
"Nothing much." she lied through her teeth. I used to remember a time where all the Digidestined were together. We told each other things. Hell, we told each other everything. Now it was all sugar coated.
Nobody knew what the truth was anymore. Especially between us friends. With the amount of lies that are told on a regular basis, it could be mistaken for a living Jerry Springer show.
"So, what's been up with you?" she said changing the subject. "I heard you quit the soccer team. Why? They need you!"
"I just don't feel like playing soccer any more." I told her truthfully. I stopped walking for a minute, and looked at her. Even after our adventures in the Digiworld, I still had a thing for her. She had only gotten more beautiful as the years rolled by.
"Dai." she said looking up at me. I knew she could tell something was wrong. She always could.
"It's nothing." I assured her, plastering the happiest smile I could muster at the minute on my face.
She still didn't give up. Now she knew something was wrong. "Daisuke." she said placing her hands on her hips.
"Kari. Drop it." I said icily. I didn't mean to, but I just did. I saw the look of hurt glistening in her eyes, and I felt horrible. "I'm sorry." I sighed. "I didn't mean to snap at you."
The wind kicked up again, blowing out hair in the wind, and getting it all tangled.
I lifted my hand, and brushed away a piece of her long brown hair. My fingers touched her porcelain face, sending shivers up my back. I just stayed like that for a minute. Gazing into her beautiful eyes. Holding her face in my hand, while my fingers glided through her silky hair.
God. The only thing I wanted to do was kiss her. Pull her into my arms, and kiss her madly. That's all I've ever wanted to do.
"Dai please." she said shutting her eyes, and pulling my hand away from her face.
"What?" I said as I lowered my head to meet hers. We were about eye level now.
"Tk." she whispered softly, as if she was trying to remind herself of something.
"What about him?" I said as I pulled her chin up. I lowered my head till my lips touched hers.
The feeling was glorious. Everything just fit together perfectly. I wrapped my arms around her waist, and pulled her closer to me.
She didn't even react. It was like she was a stiff corpse in my arms. I pulled away, reluctantly, because I was worried.
She was staring blankly at me. Tears slipping out of her eyes. Her bottom lip began to tremble.
"I'm sorry." she said as she rushed off. As luck would have it, Tk showed up with a bunch of his basketball jock friends, and scooped Kari up in his arms.
He was on crutches from the basketball injury he had taken the night before, but that still didn't stop him.
She laughed and kissed him. Right in front of me. God I felt like a fool. So I didn't bask in my idiocy, and I left. I just got the hell out of there, and didn't bother looking back.
"I love you Kari!" Tk shouted happily. I knew it wasn't directed at me, but his voice was carried in the wind, and I heard him.
Kari laughed. "I love you to Tk." she said kissing him.
At that moment. A hot knife was driven through my heart. I said screw walking, and I sprinted off in a mad dash for home.
I was on the verge of tears, and I was completely crushed inside, but I had a surprisingly liberated sensation in me.
I couldn't explain it then, but it started to become clearer as I walked up the stairs to my apartment.
The door was already open, so Jun was home. Mom and dad usually got home really late from work, which left us in charge of supper. I slammed the door shut, announcing my arrival home, to the whole apartment complex.
"Welcome home sunshine." Jun said sarcastically, as she returned to her phone conversation.
I snarled at her. Got. She was your classic girl. Phone. Boy. Makeup. Clothes. That's all she talked about.
I walked directly for my room, not bothering attempting conversation with her. She was impossible to get through to when she was on the phone. And besides, I had more important things to worry about.
I jumped onto my large bed, admiring the black walls, and the thousands of posters that covered them. I listed off the posters in my head.
I had gazed at them for so long, I knew them off by heart. Korn. Metallica. Nirvana. Marilyn Manson. Hole. God. There were so many.
But I didn't waste time busying myself with stupid things like re-memorizing my collection of rock groups, and I just set to work.
I had to get this done, or else nothing would work! I mean. The whole group depended on this! They had already done it, so it was my turn now.
I riffled through my back pac, and found the small bottle I was looking for. I knew this was going to hurt more than the tattoo, but it wouldn't leave such a mark. I hoped anyway.
It was a bottle of clear nail-polish. Well, that's what it looked like. Only a few people knew what it actually was, and they would take that secret to the grave.
I pulled out the brush. I had seen Jun do this so many times that it wasn't a new thing for me. I just hoped she didn't come in any time soon.
There was a short, impatient knock at the door. I sighed. Typical. The last person I wanted to see in the world.
"Time for your medication Dai." Jun smiled, as she shook the pill bottle happily. She had on a low-cut green dress that looked horrible on her.
"I don't want it." I said bitterly, as I pulled off the bandage on my hand, and tossed it in the garbage can to my right.
"Dai please." she pleaded. "You're not going to get better unless you... is that a tattoo?!" she suddenly exploded.
"Yeah. So what?" I snapped. "What are you gonna do? Tell mom?"
She looked hurt. "No. Just as long as you take your pill." she said handing me a circular tablet.
"Maybe later." I replied as I took it, and placed it on my table. I took my seat back, and reached into the drawer, pulling out a cigarette.
"Daisuke!" Jun screamed. "Put that away!" I snickered, as I lit it, and inhaled deeply.
"Now you gonna tell mom and dad?" I blew the smoke right in her direction.
Jun sighed. "You know I won't. But please. Try to make this easy. Please."
"Maybe." I quipped, as I returned to my smoke. I hated the taste of them, but I knew they pissed her off.
"Oh. Have you seen my black eyeliner?" she asked as she exited my room. "I have a date tonight."
"Stupid slut." I whispered under my breath. "No."
"Okay. Bye then." she said as she shut the door lightly.
Almost instantly, I grabbed the bottle from its hiding spot, and opened it again. "Here goes nothing." I said as I shut my eyes, and painted the tips of my fingers.
The burning set in as soon as the cool liquid touched my skin. I wanted to scream, but I knew that would alert Mrs. Goody Two Shoes out there, so I bit down hard on my lip.
The stinging went away after about a minute. I dipped my hands in cold water, and let the refreshing coolness flood over my sore fingers.
Now came the time to see if all my hard work had finally payed off. There was a small ink pad I had hidden away under a bunch of junk. I was sure of that.
After a long search, I found it under a pair of soccer socks. 'Perfect.' I thought, as I opened it, and dried my hands. Luckily for me, it hadn't fried out.
I pushed all my fingers in it, and took out a scribbled on, sheet of paper. I pressed my hand down hard, and held it for a few seconds, before removing it.
I stared down at the paper, holding my breath. I let it out, smiling happily, as I stared down at five different sized blobs of black ink.
I wanted to scream again. This time, a very happy scream. It worked! Everything worked! I had already finished doing my teeth, so it was no problem! We were actually going to pull it off!
I quickly finished my other hand, and tested it out. Perfect like the first. So, after that, I got ready, and pulled on my black jacket.
"I'm going Jun." I called out as she looked over at me. Thankfully, she only caught the back of me.
"By Dai." she said sadly, as she sighed heavily.
"So. Can you get me them?" a girl from my class asked.
"Are you kidding me? Lady, we'll do the job for you. We've been looking for a good way out, and this is perfect." I said disguising my voice.
"Great." she said extending her hand. "Shake?"
I held out my tattooed hand, and shook. "This will be perfect." I said pulling back, and reaching into my large over coat, pulling out a small hand gun. "Is this what you want?"
"No. It has to be bigger." she said shaking her head.
I snapped my fingers. At once two men came over, and open their coats, revealing multiple firearms. "This one!" she said brushing her fingers across a large rifle. "This is perfect."
"Great." I said as she walked away. My friends waited until we saw her drive away.
"So Dai. Back to RIP?"
"Yeah." I muttered, as I shut my jacket, and began walking away from them. The walk was a short one, but still, it was enough to take a lot out of you.
"So. We're really gonna do this one?" Jake asked as he pulled off his jacket, and threw it carefully over the couch in his basement.
"Yeah. We're all going to die anyway. Might as well be remembered for it." I said shrugging my slender shoulders.
God. I remember how we all met. It was odd though. I never thought our friendship would route this deep. But I was glad they were around. It made things easier.
"Did she give you the target?" Sammy asked as he grabbed a can of beer.
"Tomorrow." I answered, as he tossed one over to me. I caught it easily.
"So." Keith said as she opened his can. "So. Whose turn is it?"
"Mine." I sighed, as I turned around and faced them all. "Well, it started a while ago. Back when I was Mr. School Spirit." I said mocking myself. "The one guy I idolized more than anything, screwed me over. I caught him doing some drugs, and the dealer caught me after he left. He injected me with this drug he created, and needless to say, it was a used needle. That's how I caught AIDS."
"Sorry man." Jake said hitting my back.
"Whatever. That's the past now." I said smiling mischievously. We stayed like that the whole night. Drinking and partying. Thank God Jake's parents were away.
The phone rang, waking us all up. Since I was closest, I answered it. "Hello." I said.
"The dead line has been moved over to today." the voice snapped. "Get over here now!" with that, she hung up.
I smiled. "Get up boys! Its show time!" within 10 minutes, we were up and dressed and walking over to the high school.
"We're here." I said to her as we approached the school. I had my hand on my pistol, beneath my jacket.
"Kill them all except for the one with the cast." she snarled.
"As you say miss." I said walking over to the class room door. "Oh, can we have a little fun?" I asked.
"Go ahead. Just make sure the girl I showed you dies. I don't care how you do it, just make it painful."
"With pleasure." Keith said as he whipped out his gun, and walking into the door. At once, screams were heard, followed by gunshots.
I was in the class room, shooting at everybody that got in my way. I turned my attention back to the pretty girl I was pinning to the chalkboard.
"Please don't kill me." she begged a little louder.
"How about, no." I said pulling the trigger. I let go of her, and let her body slip lifelessly to the ground. There was a large blood stain and bullet hole on the green board.
I turned away from the gruesome sight, and smirked at our handy work. Everyone was dead except for Tk, who was standing up, heaving massively.
I looked at each of the students. Scanning their faces. "She's not there."I said loudly. Making sure Tk heard me.
"Why haven't you killed me?" Tk shouted at me. I had the most horrified expression on his face. "You killed all them, so kill me!" he said opening his arms wide, making himself impossible to miss. "Just shoot!" he screamed again. It was a tempting offer, and I was about to take him up on it, until I saw the once bright white cast, that was now soiled in blood.
"No!" Kari said getting up. "Tk don't!" she begged. Her entire body was drenched with a sticky red liquid, and I had the worst feeling in the pit of my stomach.
'It has to be her. The original target.' I gulped. The last thing in the world I wanted to do was hurt her. But she hurt me by choosing Tk. Well, life isn't fair. "You're the girl." I snarled as I whipped out another gun. I aimed it directly for her head, so it was a clean shot, and she wouldn't feel any pain.
"Kari!" Tk shouted, as he pushed her out of the way. I shot, and it fortunately hit him, but in the shoulder. I smirked as he went down.
"Kari!" he said again as he placed his hand over the bullet hole, and fumbled clumsily over to her. He kept slipping on the blood, and he kept falling.
I almost began to laugh at the sight. Here, the most popular guy at Odaiha High, not even able to walk straight. But the quiet whimper from Kari made me remember my original mission.
I walked over to her, loading another shot. I held the gun straight at her head. But her eyes, God, her eyes did something to me.
She just stared at me, ready to accept her fate. Ready to die. I wish I had her courage. I swallowed hard, and I realized I couldn't do it. I couldn't end her life. I loved her too much.
"Little girl, just die now." I said firing my gun. I aimed it low, so it just hit her side. Kari let out a piercing screaming.
"No!" Tk shouted as he quickly scurried over to her. The bodies of all the people my friends and I had killed, blocked his path.
'I'm sorry.' I thought to her, as I saw the look of pain in her eyes. I quickly turned the gun on myself, placing it close to my temple. I swallowed hard, and pressed the trigger, sending a bullet deep into my head.
I stayed alive, just for the next minute. Well, just long enough to see Tk hover over me. His hand accidentally grazed the side of my head, getting it drenched with my blood.
The girl then flew into the room, and looked around pleased. Kari's hand then shot up, grabbing her leg. The next few seconds were a complete loss for me. I couldn't hear anything, and my vision was going on me.
But I did hear something. The last thing I've ever heard. I think it was my punishment for what I did. A gun had been pried out of my hands, and then, there was the earth halting shot that was fired.
Tk screamed, then slumped over me. Our heads were practically touching. But then, the most cruel thing I have ever heard, rang through the class room.
The girl that had hired us. She was laughing. And I died with that laughter ringing through my ears.
