Triceratops
"Three Horned Face"

Triceratops is one of the most famous Dinosaurs (and my personal favorite since early years...), it's on par with Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Allosaurus and Apatosaurus(Brontosaurus) on well-known level. Thanks to Jurasic Park, Dilophosaurus and Velociraptor are added to the Dinosaurs of Fame. Triceratops grew to over twenty feet long and 5 tons, making it the largest Certopsian dinosaur yet discovered. Triceratops skull was 6 feet long, almost half of which was bony frill (assumed to be for protecting the neck, or maybe a muscle anchor) and had two 3ft long horns, one over each eye, a smaller horn was located on the nose. Triceratops seems to have been a common Dinosaur and we know a lot about it thanks to the many fossils we've found of it. 30 skulls were found in 1900 in Wyoming for example. Like Tyrannosaurs, Certopsians tend to be found in North America and Asia.

Triceratops is thought to have travelled in herds and crossed rivers regularly, making it a sort of aquatic Dinosaur. As with sauropod herds the young tended to be in the middle with the adults protectively arrayed along the outside. It is thought that Triceratops would form a protective line or circle, horns pointing outwards towards the predator(s) to protect their young. Triceratops didn't have binocular vision thanks to the positioning of its eyes, scientists like Bob Bakker think it swung its head side-to-side to get a good view of its environment. Triceratops may have used its bony frill to attract mates or bluff out possible opponents by flushing blood into the frill for a display of color. Triceratops was a herbivore, taking bites out of low vegetation with its parrot-like beak. Even with its defensive frill and heavy horns it was a prey animal, subject to being hunted by Tyrannosaurs and perhaps large 'raptors'.

It's a shame Triceratops never got much of a role in either of the Jurassic Park movies... Surely they could have done more with it than having it camped out sick or cameos? So often portrayed as Tyrannosaurus Rex's main enemy and even Lost World didn't have much Triceratops screen-time, oi. Though, the little bits of it messing up the antoganist's camp were kinda cool. Oh, and I can't even find a good picture to put online here, can you believe that? ARG!
