Guerilla Gardening A-Go-Go

The last few weeks in Belfast has seen the rise of a new guerrilla community permaculture squat  garden.  The garden is situated on what was formerly ‘waste land’ (primarily used for dumping domestic waste & builders rubble for years…) between Eglantine & Malone Avenue in South Belfast. Access to the garden is via an alleyway just past the Abacus Chinese Restaurant on Eglantine Ave (the Malone Road side close to the Botanic Inn).

So there's been 3 working/play days on St. Patrick’s Day, Friday 26th Mar, & Tue 13th of April with around 20 people working on the garden. The work has been fun not too taxing & the days have turned out to be a fun for all the family. The transformation of the land in such a short amount of time is inspirational.

So far we’ve planted lots of willow trees (which are beginning to bud) blackcurrant & gooseberry bushes, various herbs & flowers, comfrey for green manure, & we’ve just put in some spuds. We’ve also built a wormery compost heap, cleaned up rubbish & are collecting old bricks for building raised beds.

There’s currently a telephone list to notify people about upcoming working/play days you can e-mail daaa if want to be added to that).

Keep an eye on the events page for details of next gardening day.   & even if you don’t fancy getting you’re hands dirty come along for the fun as the garden is developing as a great social space (we're scheming BBQ’s outdoor workshops, tai chi sessions & whatever in the wonderful Belfast Summer).

& If that's not enough gardening for you the folk at green action have also created a roof garden on top of Queens University Student Union, with lots of herbs & flower. It's nice to see some life & colour on one of Belfasts ugliest buildings. Contact green action to get involved greenaction@earthling.net
