ADDING WHOLE NUMBERS AND DECIMALS

There are a few addition strategies (or algorithms) that you should be able to do in 5th grade. The partial-sums method is going to be the focus here.

The Partial-sums method is a way to add in which you add each place (ones, tens, hundreds, and so on) seperately and are then added together to get a final answer. Check this out:

Whole Numbers
                                                    322
                                                  +594

Add the 100s.   ----------------------- 800
Add the 10s.   ------------------------ 110
Add the 1s.   ----------------------- +    6
Add the partial sums.   ------------- 916

Decimals
                                                    6.58
                                                  +7.90

Add the 1s.   ------------------------- 14.00
Add the tenths.   ---------------------- 1.40
Add the hundredths.   ----------- +    0.08
Add the partial sums.   ------------- 15.48

That's not too bad, is it? If you need more practice, check out the next section!
