Two Definitions
When the print-trade talk about Print On Demand (from here onwards we will use the abbreviation ‘POD’), there are two distinct uses for the system.
POD Printing
With traditional document printing methods, especially when it concerns books and other kinds of publications, the publisher has to order a relatively large quantity to be able to sell this document at a reasonable price, especially if the publisher is selling direct. But such quantities require a large initial investment, and such investments are often beyond the pocket of self-publishers. Carrying such a large inventory of printed books also requires the practical logistics of space.
By taking the document and using POD technology, a publisher can carry little or no inventory, saving money on inventory storage, and possible reprint costs in the event of a revision to the published document. Modern digital production equipment can both print and bind documents on the fly, with quantities as little as a SINGLE copy. Using this technology, a publisher can therefore order enough copies of their document to fill orders, and not have to carry inventory.Variable-Data Printing
Marketing has become a business that is much more specific in targeting. Being able to modify marketing literature to the individual that will be reading that literature can make quite a difference, and the same technology that allows POD printing also provides for fast turnaround in variable-data printing.A brochure can be personalized to contain only those marketing points that have the most interest to the reader. The brochure can even be designed to address the reader by name and/or company identity, making the marketing drive much more personal and direct. Even images can be personalized to fit the reader’s known preferences, although many of these options are reliant on initial market research. The more detailed the research, the more variable the personalized document can become.
