<About PGP and My PGP Key>

PGP stands of "Pretty Good Privacy". It is a program which provides digital encryption, digital signatures, and other things. It works on a "public key" basis. if someone has a copy of PGP and has created and published a public key, anyone else can send that person an encrypted msg, which no one but the person whose key it is can read. If someone with a published key Digitally "signs" a message, anyone who has the public key can verify the msg, and be absolutely sure that the msg was signed by someone who had access to the private key which matched the public key. Part of the point is that public keys are Public, you can safely give them to anyone. The only trick is to make sure that the key you get labeled Jon Jonnes's Key really came from Jon Jones.

PGP uses high-quality methods -- even the full force of the government might well have problems breaking a PGP encrypted msg, or faking a PGP signature. In fact, when the government has wanted to do so, they have generally gotten the computer where the key was stored, rather than trying to break the encryption. PGP is easy to use, and it is available free or for a small charge (depending on the version) for non-commercial use. You can get it at <http://www.pgp.com> ($$) or at <http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html> (free). There are many other sites -- search for "PGP Distribution" on google or any web search engine.

After My accident, some people wondered if I was really me. If I had had a published PGP key before the accident, i could have proved that I was the same person afterwards. Also there is now a virus, known as Klez, which fakes the from address on its emails, and several people have gotten virus infected mail claiming to come from me. In fact I myself have gotten infected mail claiming to come from me. For these reasons, and others,i have installed PGP and generated a PGP public key. It can be found below. I will be signing some email msgs and newsgroup posts with PGP, and anyone with a copy and this key can verify that they do come from me. Anyone who wants to email me privately can use PGP and this key to do so. if you aren't interested in this level of security or privacy, just ignore these signatures. i won't be sending encrypted mail to anyone except those who have asked me to.
