This easy-to-read modern tablature should be completely faithful to Francois Campion's original tablature. Let me know of any errors you find. Donald Sauter.

Short ID: FC14. Title: Allemande a 4 tems. Composer: Francois Campion. Source: Nouvelles decouvertes sur la Guitarre. 2nd manuscript page inserted after page 10. Date: 1705. Facsimile: Minkoff (1977), page 28. Tuning: Bb D G C F (tuning 1). Time sig: C with slash ("cut time" symbol). Fixes and modifications (M=measure r=rhythm s=string): M16r10s4 original showed messy correction. Presumed here to be fret b (=1). M18 original presents a problem. It shows either 4.5 beats or 5 depending on whether or not a misplaced dot applies to the first 4er rhythm. There is also a legibility problem. The original looks something like: ^ __ __ __ __ __ .| | |- | |- | __b___b___c___*_*_____________b___c___ |__c_________________c___*_e__________| |__c___________c_______________c___a__| |__a__________________________________| |__.___c___a_________a___a____________| Blob 1 looks like "e" or "c". Blob 2 gives no hint of what it was supposed to be. Blob 3 looks most like "e". That makes no sense, so "c" is the next best guess. I ignore the dot to the left of rhythm stem 1. (It would have had more weight if this tablature were engraved, giving the dot a reason for being on the wrong side.) I deleted everything at rhythm 6 completely. Those notes are repeated, anyway. I hate measures like this in Baroque guitar manuscripts. Tell me what it's supposed to be. Tablature elements to be added by hand: Slurs. If only a starting point is given, slur includes all the following uninterrupted notes on the same string. M4 r3-4s1, r6-7s1. M5 r1s1, r3-4s2, r6s4, r10s2, r13s4, r15s5. M6 r1s2, r5s2, r7-8s1. M7 r2-3s1, r4-5s1, r6-7s3, r8s3, r11s1. M8 r2s5, r5s1, r7-8s2. M12 r3-4s3, r7s5. M13 r4-5s3 (original started on s4.) M14 r2-3s2, r5s3, r8-9s2, r8s5. (Original does not show 2nd slur.) M15 r2-3s3 (original started on s2), r5-6s2 (original started on s3). M16 r2s5, r5-6s4, r8s3, r11-12s2. M17 r5s4, r8-9s2, r11-12s2. M18 r4s1, r6s2. Take a moment to fill out the 16th-note beams. Strums: Arrowheads ^ and v indicate strums. Open strings in strummed chords were not shown in the tablature; add as many open strings as sound good. It's worth re-drawing the ^ arrowhead right at the top of the associated stem. Repeat path: repeat from m20 back to m10r4. Explanation of symbols: " = trill (starting on upper neighbor). , = mordent (main note to lower neighbor and back to the main note). . = do not strum this string in the chord. z = rest. Fill in to make a solid block. Octave doublings: To keep certain musical lines intact on the modern guitar, consider adding or substituting the next octave up. For example, see: m3r5, m11r3, m12r7-8 and m18r3. Performance style: I am unclear about the appropriateness of inegales rhythms in this piece. If 8th note passages are played inegales (which sounds right to me), how do you treat written-out 16th notes? Suggested simplification (if need be): ______________ |____________| |_"4______"4_| |__2_ to ____| |__________7_| |____________| |____________| Leading measures in Campion's original tablature: 1 4 6 7 10 12 14 16 18 20. Last measure is 21. *** Download and edit out all material above and below the tablature. *** See my printing tips in the page, "General comments on the tablature." *** Print out starting with the title line below.
