Short ID: FC23. Title: Chacone. Composer: Francois Campion. Source: Nouvelles decouvertes sur la Guitarre. Page 13. Date: 1705. Facsimile: Minkoff (1977), page 35. Tuning: Bb D G C F (tuning 1). Time sig: 3. Fixes and modifications (M=measure r=rhythm s=string): M31r2 original showed no rhythm symbol. 8th symbol added here. Tablature elements to be added by hand: Slurs. If only a starting point is given, slur includes all the following uninterrupted notes on the same string. M6 r4s1, r7s2. Take a moment to fill out the 16th-note beams. Strums: Arrowheads ^ and v indicate strums. Open strings in strummed chords were not shown in the tablature; add as many open strings as sound good. Consider writing in the additional notes you decide on. M5r2 the interpretation is to add the new note to the previous chord and strum the whole chord. Regarding consecutive strums-to-the-bass (i.e., toward the ceiling assuming an upright guitarist holding the guitar in a reasonably conventional manner - you're not going to hear me say "up-strum" or "down-strum"!), I think strokes with the back of the thumb nail followed by a finger may be intended. For example, consider ppi or ppm in m1 and at the beginning of m21. But I'm not the expert. Take a moment to re-draw the ^ arrowhead right at the top of the associated stem, just under the beam if a beam is present. Explanation of symbols: " = trill (starting on upper neighbor). , = mordent. There are none in this piece. . = do not strum this string in the chord. Trill clarification: m42r1s2 upper neighbor shown to be fret b (=1). Octave doublings: To keep certain musical lines intact on the modern guitar, consider adding or substituting the next octave up. For example, see: m7r3 and m30r2. Performance style: consider playing the 8th notes inegales, that is, as dotted 8ths or "swing" 8ths (triplet feel). Leading measures in Campion's original tablature: 1 6 10 14 18 23 27 31 37 41. Last measure is 45. *** Download and edit out all material above and below the tablature. *** See my printing tips in the page, "General comments on the tablature." *** Print out starting with the title line below.
