A "MOTOWN" KID

Growing
up in suburban Detroit, Denny was immersed in the sounds of Motown early on,
connecting to that great music and its solid Beat.
Piano lessons that most kids steered clear of, became Denny's first step
toward a lifelong
destiny of music, rhythm and song.
THE FIFTIES: EARLY ROCK & ROLL
Denny took up the drums as a high school freshman, joining the student
band and keeping The Beat in a small jazz ensemble. But the pulse of rock
& roll was sweeping the nation, powered by a cool new sound: the electric
guitar. Inspired by "rockabilly" pioneers, Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly,
Denny switched to strumming a six-string rather than pounding the skins. He
learned basic licks and three-chord blues progressions on a neat little Danelectro
electric guitar trimmed in black and white (click
photo at right).
Next step: rhythm guitar in a high-school rocker trio named the Jades, doing those
instrumentals (now called "surf music") by The Ventures
and Duane Eddy in the late fifties. Although no one in the band could get up the nerve to sing,
the Jades somehow twanged their way to Chicago winning first
prize in the school talent show. The thrill of
performing on stage before a live audience took hold!
THE SIXTIES: PETER, PAUL & DENNY?
Denny's college years brought a transition to acoustic guitar and folk sing-alongs of the Kingston Trio era. But unplugged music just didn't pack
The
Beat and adrenaline
rush of rock. Before long
he hooked up the electric again and teamed up with new musician friends, Dave, Kevin & Thom,
forming the D-Fenders, a cool combo of two Fender Jazzmaster guitars, bass and drums.
Microphones were added to amplify vocals from Chuck
Berry to Roy Orbison to the ultimate party song, Louie Louie.
The D-Fenders were an immediate hit on the college circuit from Detroit to
Ann Arbor, playing to university audiences and "Animal House" fraternity
parties. Summer road trips highlighted the college years
as the D-Fenders woke up tourist towns all over the Great Lakes
with their backroad gigs.
"TRUE LOVE" - A NEW THEME SONG?
In 1966,
Denny's love for music suddenly met up with True Love, the real thing. He found the girl of his dreams,
Mary Alice. Marriage, family and daytime career
became higher priorities than rockin' & rollin'.
Amps, mikes and sound gear were cashed-in for
furniture in the newlyweds' first home… Denny and Mary Alice and
their two kids lived happily ever after. But
hold on. There's more to the
story...
THE SEVENTIES: HONEY, THERE'S A BAND IN THE GARAGE!
Fast forward a few years. The family and daytime career
were on track. But that rockin' Beat imbedded in Denny's roots kept bubbling to the surface. "Jamming" the oldies with friends, neighbors, or
anyone who could carry a tune was
a frequent weekend happening. It was "garage band" noise, but a blast for
those who dropped by with a beer in hand to
listen or play along.
Eventually, a trio of
thirty-somethings smoothed out the garage-sound chaos
and named themselves Cobb Creek Revival.
Their specialty: Any excuse for a party! Songs of Neil Diamond, Dion,
Three Dog Night and a medley of classic fifties hits resonated through the years until the drummer
relocated to another state.
THE EIGHTIES: MIDDLE-AGED MEN MAKIN' MUSIC
In
1981, five middle-aged
guys with similar
backgrounds somehow hooked up to form Rockin' Gold, a nostalgia showband. Phil,
the drummer and a melodic genius, created intricate 4-part vocal harmonies and was the driving force behind the group.
Complex melodies of the Del Vikings,
Eagles, Beach Boys and Beatles were added to the classic oldies playlist.
Weekly
Wednesday night rehearsals in Denny's soundproof music-room produced a crisp, finely-tuned sound
that audiences loved. Rockin' Gold,
appearing in gold lamé
jackets, side-stepped the late-nite bar scene. But they hugely enjoyed a
variety of gigs at country clubs, festivals, and private parties around metro
Detroit.
DENNY RETIRE? Naaah... REBORN!
It was great while it lasted...12 years together. But the sound of Rockin'
Gold fell silent when two of the band members moved from Michigan. In 1993, Denny retired from the
business world and settled in the Florida sunshine, enjoying the beach, tennis
and balmy weather. But soaking up sun wasn't quite enough. The Beat
was still in
his
head and just wouldn't go away. Tinkering with computers
and music, Denny discovered he could create sequences of instrumental sounds to simulate a live
band. By playing his guitar and singing along with this synthesized
music, he had "recreated" the old band and could enjoy his favorite oldies
again.
What began as a "techie" hobby eventually morphed into a passion, and one evening
his new combo-sound drifted across the pool at a neighborhood party.
It was 1996. The thrill of performing for a live audience had returned, and
DooWop Denny was "born."
AND THE BEAT
GOES ON
Today
Denny links a MIDI computer to his guitar and
vocals, delivering a big-combo sound and a kind of "magic that melts the years
away" for the over-50 generation. Nearly five decades of entertainment
savvy have schooled him to connect with his audience and play to the crowd.
A virtual one-man-band, Denny draws from a deep vein of rock & roll
history, belting out a 250-song cavalcade of feel-good music. Rockin' Oldies. Island Tunes. DooWop
Memories. Slow Dancin'. And even some Classic Country.
Home based in Florida during the winter months and Colorado during summertime,
the DooWop Denny Show has gathered a loyal following over the years
with weekly appearances at the Saltwater Cafe' in Venice, Florida, and the Blue
Spruce in Frisco, Colorado. Bookings include community events, resorts,
weddings, country clubs, cruise ships, anniversary parties, and private
gatherings.
