This is one of those movies that disturb
you for a while. I found it in the comedy section of my local video
store, which turns out to be grossly misleading category for the content
of this movie. I guess a section called “Weird Homoerotic Films”
wouldn’t sell videos—at least not in my little redneck town. There
is nothing funny about this movie, which one realizes immediately as Buck’s
mother dies in the opening scene. From there we go to a funeral where
Buck gets drunk and grabs his childhood friend Chuck’s ass. Pretty
hilarious! The tone of the movie is sinister, as well as homoerotic,
and we are left to ponder whether or not Buck is a sociopath, a sexual
pervert, or just sexually obsessed and socially stunted. In my review
for Chasing Amy, I mention the quote by
Gore Vidal, “There are no homosexuals, only homosexual acts,” and I wish
I had saved that reference for this movie because it is even more appropriate
here. Anyway you slice it, Chuck and Buck is not a comedy.
It is a tale about secrets of the past and the ways we “play” at being
adult when we grow older. I give the movie three stars for the way
in which it projected Buck’s child-like ways as threatening and then totally
manipulated my perception of him and Chuck by the end of the movie.
Consider yourself warned that the video Chuck and Buck is no lighthearted
fare for those looking for a laugh out loud comedy flick.
