2005, Directed by Robert Rodriguez. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller. Starring: Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Josh Hartnett, Nick Stahl, Benecio Del Toro, Clive Owen, Brittany Murp hy, etc.
This is a movie based on the graphic (a.k.a. comic book) novel by Frank Miller, and Robert Rodriguez (the director) went out of his way, both stylistically and in artistic control of the screenplay to make Frank Miller the true creator of this movie. Rodriguez provides himself as a conduit for Miller to bring his ideas to the big screen without losing the comic book feel. The movie succeeds in this by using computerized graphics that make the screen look like picture panels in a comic book. Yet the actors retain their 'human' looks--the technique is very effective and fun! The technique reminds you this is comic book fiction, so the over the top villians, creepy urban settings, incredible action sequences, and terribly nobel heros seem appropriate and exactly right. Regular movie goers might find the film silly, but buffs will appreciate the style and cinematography. You find yourself sucked into the noir world Miller creates and begin to care about monstrous characters like Marv (Mickey Rourke) and Bruce Willis as the 'Dick Clarkesque' cop willing to endure years of prison in order to protect a little girl. The plot and characters are black and white, i.e. good vs. evil, and it is easy to tell which is which. I gave this movie 5 stars because I could watch it over and over |
