3. Abraham BYLER b. 3 May 1792, North Carolina, m. Rhoda O'DANIEL, b. 9 Feb 1807, South Carolina, d. 13 Jan 1884,
Texas, buried: Pine Springs Cemetery, Flatonia, Texas.  Abraham died 31 Jan 1875, Texas, buried: Pine Springs Cemetery, Flatonia,
Texas.  Abraham Byler was the son of Jacob Byler and wife Bathsheba Oxford.  He and his wife, Rhoda O'Daniel are buried in Pine
Springs Cemetery about four miles north of Flatonia.  They were in Alabama as late as 1834 and in Mississippi as early as 1841 and
as late as 1844.  In Guadalupe County, Texas, there is a Power of Attorney given by Abraham Byler to Alfred T. Byler of Moniteau
County, Missouri.  The date is 27 Sep 1847.  This indicates Abraham was in Texas by this date.  Also, this connects him with the
Byler family of Moniteau County, Missouri.  Abraham had half a league of land between Muldoon and LaGrange.  The Houston
Post for Sunday, Sep 29, 1963 said that on 31 Dec 1867, Abraham Byler bought 896 acres of land off the south end of the
Abbott place. The USC 1870 Fayette County, Texas shows him with real estate worth $10,000 and personal property
worth $35,000.  Rhoda's parents were William Scott O'Daniel and wife Mary Caroline Abercrombie.  Rhoda had several brothers in Guadalupe County, Texas.  One of them was County Clerk. Source: Jacob Byler of North Carolina, by Roger L. Byler, p. 37.

County, Tennessee, buried: Byler-Marchant Cemetery, Rover, TN.  John died 24 Jun 1872, Lunenburg, Izard County, Arkansas,
buried: Lunenburg Cemetery, Izard County, AR.
John Byler came to Izard County from Bedford County, Tennessee in November, 1849.  He had been born in Carter County,
Tennessee on the 23rd of January 1797 and left that county in 1808 when his father moved to Bedford County, Tennessee.
Shortly after arriving in Bedford County, John Byler professed religion and joined the Enon Baptist Church, to which his father,
Abraham had donated land.
In 1818, troubles with the Seminole Indians called many of the young men of Tennessee to volunteer for military service.
John Byler volunteered on 30 January 1818 and joined Captain Neverly William's company of the Second Regiment, Tenessee
Volunteer Mounted Gunmen.  He served until 30 June 1818 and would later draw two land bounties in Izard County for his service.
On the 15th of June 1820, John Byler married Miss Medean Atkinson, the daughter of State Senator John Atkinson and his
first wife, Mary Dunn.  Medean Atkinson was born 3 June 1799 and died at her home, Byler Bottoms in Bedford County,
Tennessee on 10 May 1845.  She was buried beside her daughter, Nancy Byler Marchant, in the Byler-Marchant Cemetery.
When John Byler arrived in Izard County, he settled on Rocky Bayou Creek, near Lunenburg.  In 1852, he was elected
to serve Izard County as Surveyor, a position he held until 1856.  It is not known what his political views were during the War
of Rebellion.  Two of his sons were soldiers of the Confederacy while one elected not to fight but moved to Rolla, Missouri.
John Byler died at Lunenburg on 24 June 1872 and is buried in the Lunenburg Cemetery [No marker].

Note: Spelling of the Atkinson sirname was spelled Adkinson in the original article.
In the 1870 Federal Census, he was living with his son, John Atkinson Byler and Family.
From Goodspeed's History of Arkansas, p 960: John Byler, was a private in the War of 1812, and was in the battle of New
Orleans.

Medean: Miss Medean Atkinson married John Byler on the 15th of June 1820.  She was the daughter of Senator John Atkinson
and his first wife Mary Dunn. Medean Adtinson died at her home, Byler Bottoms in Bedford County, Tennessee. She was buried
beside her daughter, Nancy Byler Marchant, in the Byler-MarchantCemetery.

James died 22 Mar 1879, Lavaca County, Texas, buried: Byler Cemetery, Lavaca County, Texas.  James Taylor Byler came to
Izard County, Arkansas probably in the Fall of 1855 or Spring of 1856.  It is not known where they were living between 1842,
when Nancy Love Byler died, and when they arrived in Izard County.  It is probable that they had stopped in Lauderdale County,
Tennessee where James' brothers-in-law, John and Isaac Maxwell, had settled.  James and family did not remain in Izard County long.  Sometime between 1870 and 1879 they moved to Lavaco County, Texas where James died on 22 March 1879 and is buried in
the Byler Cemetery there.  It is not known whether any of James' children remained in Izard County.

From "Jacob Byler of North Carolina" by Roger L. Byler, pp 203-204:
James Taylor Byler, Sr. was a licensed Baptist preacher, a teacher and a Justice of the Peace.  C.C. Byler of Vidor, Texas
has his JP Commission.  The late Mr. Marion Byler of Fayette County, Texas told Roger L. Byler that his grandfather (James
Taylor Byler, Sr.) had come from Mountain View, Arkansas to the home of his son T.H. Byler in Fayette County, Texas, arriving
15 Jan 1879 and dying 22 Mar 1879.  He is buried in the Byler Cemetery between Muldoon and West Point.
The following is a letter from James Taylor Byler to his uncle Joseph Byler (brother of Abraham, James Taylor's father):
"Covington Tipton County Big Hatchee 22 April 1826
"Dear Uncle    I avail myself the opportunity of informing you that I am in good health hoping these few lines may find you and
yours so too.  I have lately taken lodging with Brother William, who is married and is living within 15 miles of the mouth of Hatchee
where I intend making a crop he has five negroes.  We have planted about 25 acres in corn which is now up and has three or four
blades on a stalk the balance of our corn we will get planted next week our other crop consisting of cotton, potatoes, and looks
fine and flourishing.
"I left Fathers on the 19th of January and received a letter from Father dated 30th March which stated they were not well,
they have had a complaint called influenza or cold plague but states they were better but fearful that they were not entirely out of
danger.
"Uncle Jacob Byler has bought land of Father in this country and intends moving himself and his little sons in laws on to it the
land lies on Cane Creek north of Hatchee where I intend to spend my 70 years allotted to me by scriptue and I am not married
nor do I intend to marry shortly.  Sister Elvira, Brother Jacob and William are all married since you were here. William married
Delpha Caldwell.  Jacob married Susan Rucker.  Elvira married John Maxwell a son of Solomon Maxwell.
"Tell Cousin Thomas and D.B. Peters that I would be glad to see them here and also for them to see our Hatchee land they can
come quite hand by water and return the same way.  I wish to get as many of my acquaintance and relation settled near me as I
possibly can I believe the country to be Healthy, heartsome and really desirable.  I believe this will (some day or other) be styled
and contain the Emporium of the West.  I judge from its situation and the Vast Extant of wholesome rich country which lies between
the Tennessee River and the Mississippi and knowing this to be the garden spot in it.....  I wish I could (see ?) you and the remaining
few of my kindred in that country but my business will not permit of my leaving here yet.  The surveying business has once more
revived in this country in which I am bound to attend to - nothing more of a general nature.  Brother William wishes his best respect
to be conveyed through the medium of this letter together with mine to honored Grandmother yourself and family Uncle Samuel
Peters and family and I am dear Uncle with due respect your,
                                  Nephew
Jas T. Byler Capt Joseph Byler"

"According to the 1870 Census for Izard County, Arkansas, Catherine was the last child born in Tennessee and Susannah was
the first child born in Arkansas which would mean they went to Arkansas sometime between 1855 and 1858, or probably in 1856
or 1857.  His daughter Nancy, age 36, was still at home in 1870.  The other children named are from the second wife.  In addition
there was a Brian Lewis, wagon-maker living with them."

Another source says he was born in November 1804. Mary: Marion Byler reported to Roger L. Byler that Mary Riggs was a
full-blood Cherokee Indian and that her mother's maiden name was Black.

Thomas Hill BLACK, b. 4 Aug 1807, Williamson County, Tennessee, (son of William BLACK and Frances HILL) occupation
Col., d. 23 Jun 1889, Melbourne, Izard County, Arkansas, buried: Bingham Cemetery, Melbourne, Arkansas.  Mary died 14 Dec
1871, Melbourne, Izard County, Arkansas, buried: Bingham Cemetery, Melbourne, Arkansas.  Mary's headstone gives her name as
Mary T. Black.  However, all information I have ever seen says her name was Mary Love (Byler) Black. Thomas:
Col. Thomas Black was born on the 4th of October, 1807.  In 1813, Col. Black removed with his father from Williamson to
Bedford County, Tennessee, and when he was in his nineteenth year he was elected lieutenant of the militia.  When twenty-one years
of age was promoted to the rank of captian and subsequently in his twenty-sixth and twenty-ninth years he was made adjutant-major
and then colonel of his regiment.  When twenty-three years of age he was elected to the Tennessee legislature, where he remained for
four successive terms representing Marshall and Bedford Counties.  Within this time occurred the trouble of 1841 and 1842, relating to an ineffectual effort to remove Foster and White from the United States Senate.  Col. Black being a Democrat, dyed in the wool, voted accordingly.
In 1849, Col. Black moved with his family to Izard County, from which he was sent to represent the county in 1852.  In
1856 he was elected county and probate judge which office he filled successfully for four years, when he was appointed by the
governor for two years more.  In 1880, Col Black again represented Izard County in the State Legislature and with the expiration
of this term of office came the end of his public life.  His last years were spent in the retirement of his home circle, but he was at
all times keenly alive to passing events.  His death occurred at his residence near Melbourne, on the 23rd of June, 1889; when in his eighty-second year, and after a long and useful life.

This article states that this information was a biographical sketch taken from "Goodspeed's History of Northeast Arkansas"
printed in 1889.

Thomas Black was born 4 Aug 1807 Williamson County, Tennessee, died 23 Jun 1889.  Col Black of the Tennessee Militia was
elected in 1838 to represent Bedford County, Tennessee in the State Legislature and reelected for three more terms.  In 1849,
they moved to a farm near Melbourne, Arkansas.  In 1852, he was elected to the Arkansas Legislature and served several terms.
Being defeated, he was elected County Judge in 1858.  He ran again for the Legislature in 1860 and was defeated, but ran once
again in 1862 and won.  He retired in 1864.  He was a secessionist - a large slave owner.  He was elected to the legislature again
in 1880.  For the 1870 US Census, they were in Rocky Bayou township; for the 1880 US Census, they were in Mill Creek Township
. Thomas Black seems to have been the son of Francis Black who was with him on the 1850 US Census as age 66 born North
Carolina.

The rest were buried in California. James:
The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Luke Williams a Baptist minister being the first to come into the county.
I [Roger L. Byler] think that, at first, he came into the countyonly occassionally.  James Hill was the sheriff of Cooper County
for eight years.  There was a James Hill who was a charter member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church which was formed out of
members of Mt. Pisgah, who lived south of Moniteau Creek.  I do not know that this was the same James Hill.
There is considerable uncertainty about the Hill family.  I have no direct contact with any of the descendants of Elizabeth Peters
and James Hill.  Earl C. Phillips, who is a descendant of a sister of Elizabeth gave me the following out of his memory:  Elizabeth
Peters m. Kaleb "Cape" Hill and had Carrie Hill who married ____ Crawford, Sally Hill who married _____ Anthony, and Kaleb Hill.

30. David B. PETERS b. 16 Apr 1805, m. 25 Jul 1825, Lucy Caroline KELLEY.
David B. Peters married 25 Jul 1825 Luch Caroline Kelley (See Missour Mother of the West, Vol. III)  However, the 1850
USC Moniteau County, Missouri shows wife Sarah B. NC.  Lucy was received by experience into the California Baptist Church
in 1840.  Therefore the children born by 1840 were hers, and all may be hers.
From First Baptist Church, California, Missouri minutes (formerly Mt. Gilead):  1839 David B. Peters received by letter.  1840
Lucy Peters received by experience.  David B. Peters chosen delegate to the association.  1841 David B. Peters appointed Asst.
Church Clerk, sent as delegate to the association, sent to assist Double Springs Church.  Oct 1841 David B. Peters appointed
treasurer  1842  Church asked deed of Bro. PEters.  He refused and was censured.  A Committee form other churches was asked
to consider the matter.  They did and decided the church was wrong in censuring Mr. Peters - said he had a right to refuse to give
the deed.  They urged the church to receive second deed offered by Mr. PEters.  The church received the second deed.  1842
David B. Peters sent as delegate to association.  27 Mar 1843 received Mary K. Peters by experience and baptism.  Jul 1843
D.B. Peters chosen as delegate.  1845 D.B. Peters chosen as delegate.  1849 Difference between Peters and Russell - Peters
refused to comply with Church orders - Peters is dismissed and he is restored.  1860 D.B. Peters dismissed, restored and given letter.

Scott Peters was a teacher before the Civil War.  He was opposed to the secession but joined the Confederate Army to
be with his brother, David W. Peters.  He was slightly wounded at the battle of Champion Hill near Vicksburg being saved by a
Bible he carried in the left shirt pocket.  After the war, he continued teaching.  In 1877, he graduated in medicine from Vanderbilt
University, Nashville, Tennessee.  He practiced medicine in Alabama until 1881 when he moved to Tennessee where he practiced
until he retired in 1911.  Then, he moved back to Missouri and bought a part of the place where he was born.

She had seven children by her first marriage.  Only two survived her.  She had four children in her second marriage.
The USC Palestine Township, Cooper County, Missouri 1870 gives: Cole, Samuel 70 b. Va.  Catherine 52 b. Ky.  Madison
H. 17 b. Mo.  Jane 13 b. Mo.  Gella 11 b. Mo.
I [Roger L. Byler] think Madison must have been from the first [Samuel's] wife.  Jane and Gella are from Katy [Catherine]  I
have no record of the other two.  The family says there were two children.  I suppose the other two must have died young.  All
four of the children were born after she was forty years of age.
