"CHEAPEST OF THE CHEAP" ISPs [Updated 01-09-03]

This list is not a recommendation, but simply a listing and brief description of the included ISPs. Before relying on the information in this list, it would be wise to verify it with the information posted on the ISPs' web sites, or by contacting the ISPs for answers to specific questions, as a double-check against possible errors in the list or recent changes by the ISPs.

It is strongly recommended that Terms Of Service (TOS) be thoroughly read prior to signing up with any ISP. There is increased risk of losing money when an ISP is paid in advance more than monthly, although payment in advance quarterly by credit card should provide dispute protection. ISPs with automatic "Over Hours" charges can be very costly if the included hours are exceeded.

For more information about these and other low-cost ISPs, read user comments posted at Freedomlist's main Free/Cheap ISPs listing, as well as postings at Freedomlist Forums.

To guard against the possibility of being without internet access due to problems with an ISP, it is strongly recommended that users sign up for one or more of the Limited Free Or Nearly Free ISPs as a backup.

To help make possible future ISP changes easier, it is recommended that an e-mail service independent from an ISP be considered. See the Free Email Address Directory for more information about e-mail account options.

These ISPs are separated into three (3) sub-categories of Payment Monthly, Payment In Advance Quarterly, and Payment In Advance More Than Quarterly, based on the shortest payment term required to obtain a rate that fits this category, and are listed in order of lowest first year cost, for the shortest payment term available within each sub-category.

icon_smile.gif Good listing - Everything on one page with a link for each ISP.
See BOZ, when you put your mind to it, you can be useful,
without being biased. icon_wink.gif

The only addition which would improve the list, (although U would have to go back to edit each ISP), would be to indicate the idle-timer cutoff
number of minutes, if any.
I would also encourage a continual update of this list, rather than unending posts about the smallest of changes, or changes designed to promote cheap access on the board for certain ISP's. All in all, done very well.

Boz:

There are many things to like about your list. However, let me concentrate on one thing I like the best-the creation of a new category, "Excluded ISP's".

As Normaldude pointed out in an earlier post, a person who joins Phreego who uses 250 hours a month-not necessarily an uncommon condition in a house where several people use the computer-will get almost TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS deducted from his credit card for one month's usage!

Oh, sure, the extra charges are listed in the TOS. They even send Emails to let you know you are nearing the limit. But many people maintain a special Email address for signing up for things which they never read. This is because of the junk mail that you so frequently get after giving away your Email address to a website. And what percentage of internet users actually read the whole TOS?

I think that visitors and newbies to this board should be warned about these traps and pitfalls.

Now, if Webmaster will just consider adding the list to the Free/Cheap ISP listings somehow.

Very useful list. I'm going to print it out so that when the people I help who are computer challenged need to get another ISP we can go over the list and see which suits their pocketbook/surfing hours/access numbers.
Thanks, Boz.

Great work Boz. The master list on Freedomlist.com can be a real jungle to navigate. Your list really cuts down on the number of ISPs people need to focus on. Very useful.

The funny thing is, that is the reason that I first started putting it together, for those people that I know who are like that! icon_biggrin.gif

Also, you may already know this, but I just figured it out myself, so this could be helpful to some. Since I used BBCode when I put it together, if you print the list out normally, none of the links show. So, to get the links to print out, when you print the list from Freedomlist (using IE):
-Highlight Only The "CHEAPEST OF THE CHEAP" ISPs List (The Whole List)
-Right Click On Any Part Of The Highlighted Section
    -Select "Print"
    -Select "Selection"
-Select "Print Table Of Links" (Under "Options" Tab In IE 6.0)
-Click "Okay" (Or "Print" In IE 6.0)
This prints the list itself and a table of all of the URLs included, but not visible when the list is printed normally. I hope this helps! icon_biggrin.gif

Hello;

I think Boz really captured the moment with this list. To me it has become even more apparent with this list, that the real area of expansion for ISP dial up competition is the sub $8 zone. Look at the list Boz has here. It is diverse, a number of new businesses are in it, and some older ones.

I see the monthly payment providers and anual payment providers pushing each other, competing like nowhere else in the industry.

The big boys do not compete like this at all. They are the dinosaurs that figure they are on the top of the food pyramid. These new discount ISP's could change the business of the future, they are the ground floor opportunity taken by some adventuresome entrepreneurs.

And Freedomlist is where you go to find out about them.

And Freedomlist is where they should feel welcome to come and tell us about their new ISP offerings.

Good luck to them all.

Good net to us all,

John

I made some minor updates/changes to the list (see the first post in this thread). Nothing big.

I am disappointed that accesscheap hasn't followed through with updating their website for monthly accounts and the addition of optional POP3/SMTP e-mail. But I guess the more important matter is that they are continuing to provide excellent service to their existing customers.

Poetworld Internet seems to have launched successfully and is offering 3 day trial accounts. Has anyone tried it out?

Talent Group, although creating a stir now and then, seems to have straightened out and seems to be providing good service to its customers.

Well, nothing too exciting is going on, but it sure is nice to have these good cheap ISPs available! icon_biggrin.gif

PostPosted: Sat Feb 09, 2002 21:55 pm    Post subject: Added LyonL Reply with quote

I decided to add LyonL to the list (see the first post in this thread). It was first posted on Freedomlist at http://www.freedomlist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5739 by loki304 on 03 Feb 2002 and it looks like a great find!

I decided to include it in the list because with the $9.95 special for 4 months of service, with no obligation to continue past 4 months, and with the guarantee not to raise their regular $9.95 monthly rate until 2003, right now the average first 12-month cost is $7.46. And who knows what will happen in a few months. Maybe they will lower their regular price to $8 per month or less?

They are unique in that they have 24/7 toll-free tech support a different toll-free customer service/sign-up number, and even a different toll-free billing inquiry number.

Although their website makes it look like (at least from what I could see) that software is required, according to their tech support, a DUN connection is just fine, and the software is NOT required.

Although their website is not fully functional at this point, apparently being a very new service, their toll-free phone numbers (that are answered within moments, at least on the several times that I called), more than makes up for it at this time.

What i posted that you deleted Corrine was how can something be nearly free? Its either free or its not. Other than that Boz did a good job.

I can see your point, however I think that the term "Free ISP" has actually been reclassified as 'Setup Fee Only ISP.' Still, if QualGuard ever does accept new sign-ups, $10 for however long it runs, is one heck of a deal. icon_up.gif I can also see where something Like Access4Less and NetZero Free can be used as backup for emergency purposes, or even a "light-use" ISP.
