Jacob's Ladder

Speculum Humanae Salvationis

Augsburg 1477

And in the one hundred and third year of his life Isaac blessed Jacob, who was forty years old, and having received the blessing from his father, he went down into the desert of Beersheba, and lay down to sleep there; and when he was lying down he took a stone and made a pillow of it. And he saw in his dream, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth. And the top of it was in the heavens. And the angels of God were going up and coming down, and the Lord stood at the top of it. And Jacob woke up from his sleep, and said, "This is truly the house of God"; and he took the stone of his pillow, and made it an altar, and he anointed it with oil. And he vowed a vow and said, "Of everything which I have will I tithe for this stone." Now, it is manifest to those who possess understanding that the ladder which Jacob saw symbolizeth the Cross of our Redeemer. And the angels who were going up and down were the ministers of Zechariah and Mary, and the Magi, and the shepherds. And the Lord Who was standing at the top of the ladder symbolized Christ, Who stood on the Cross that He might go down to redeem us.

[TRANSLATOR'S NOTES.--The Power of God which was upon the top of the ladder was [a type of] the manifestation of God the Word in pure flesh of the formation of Adam. The place in which it appeared was a type of the Church; the stone under his head, which he set up for an altar, was a type of the altar; and the oil which he poured out upon it was like the holy oil wherewith they anoint the altar. COMMENTS ON JACOB'S LADDER

Enlil is symbolism of destruction and Jacob's Ladder is that of regeneration. In the wind flood due to the impact of a near earth object, chaos reclaims some of the creation and spits it out again in naturalistic and deterministic terms of some symbological schemes.  There is no room for mankind to transcend this cycle in the worldview of naturalism and determinism devoid of God. In fact, the King of Akkad was at his wits end and unable to do anything. The symbolism of a planet, celestial body, the Milky Way Galaxy, or all of the universe being swallowed has significance in a story that relates destruction (Chaos) to generation ~ Salvation from destruction.  This story made its way into other cultures. Saturn was the son of CÏlus and Terra and was given domination over the world as long as he did not bring up a male child.  In order to keep dominion over the earth he decided to swallow any that were born. When Jupiter was born Saturn's wife Rhea gave him a stone that he swallowed instead of Jupiter.  The name of the stone is Baithulus or Baithul. Baiyth is the Chaldee for house as are its Syrian and Hebrew cognates baith and beth. The Syrians called Baith-Ul the House of Saturn.  However, it is likely it originally was associated with a catastrophic event related to the heavens such as an impact of a piece of a comet or asteroid.

Lucian related Saturn to an observable astronomical event, supposing Saturn had something to do with the planet by that name and is bound in chains there.  Cicero explains the significance of the relation of Saturn to Chronos as follows:

By Saturn they mean that which comprehends the course and revolutions of times and seasons; the Greek name of which implies as much, for he is called Kronos, that is a space of time.

Immanuel Velokovsky wrote an unpublished work that relates the activity of planets to the cosmogony of the Hebrews, Sumerians, and Akkadians as well as the more familiar Greek and Roman gods and goddesses.  His work entitled In the Beginning, brings out some interesting facts that tie in the near earth impact of a time prior to Abraham and his family leaving Ur and that of the hit that destroyed the cities in the plain that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.  As a geologist I remember that my professors outright rejected his work because of some controversial theories he had that were likely pretty inaccurate.  Then again, his ideas did not have the benefit of the kind of information we now have.  He unearthed some things that are from the standpoint of Catastrophism which until recently was taboo in the world of the geologist.

Since the time of Abraham was the period of Jupiter’s domination that followed Saturn’s and preceded that of Venus, we are led to the surmise that the thunderbolts which destroyed the plain with its cities originated from Jupiter, or from a magnetosphere or ionosphere overcharged by the nearby presence of the giant planet...

...The period was that of Jupiter’s era of domination that followed that of Saturn and preceded that of Venus; and reference to the king and high priest Malki-zedek ("My King is Zedek," Zedek being the usual name of the planet Jupiter), in the days of the patriarch Abraham and of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, seem to support my interpretation of the agent of the catastrophe. There is ample evidence that an impact by the break-up of a comet, a piece of an asteroid, and/or a bolide storm wreaked destruction in this part of the Middle East with devastating effects that included famine, the total breakdown of civil order and massive regional migration, before the one that hit in the Dead Sea.  The Hebrew word for House of God is Bethel but the word Bethuel or Bethul means the house destroyed by God.  According to the unpublished work by Immanuel Velikovsky, In the Beginning, Marduk and Horus are the planet Jupiter. Note that Marduk usurped the gods of Akkadia and Sumer and replaced them.  Interestingly the message that God gave to Abraham and the nations that come from his loins is that they are saved from this. God keeps His promises. Velikovsky continues with his explanation:

In the Tractate Shabbat of the Babylonian Talmud it is said that in order to teach Abraham the futility and meaninglessness of astrology, the Lord let the planet Zedek, or Jupiter, change its rising point from west to east:

"Go forth (i.e. cease) thy planet-(gazing), for Israel is free from planetary influence. What is thy calculation? Because Zedek (Jupiter) stands in the West? I will turn it back and place it in the East." And thus it is written, Who hath raised up Zedek from the East? He hath summoned it for his sake (sc. for the sake of Abraham).(outside source 1)

The Babylonians described Marduk, or Jupiter, as having an eastward motion, different from the other planets: "The earliest system from Babylon has, however, East and West reversed, and assigns to its chief god Marduk, as god of the planet Jupiter, a definite easterly direction; to Mercury, on the other hand, a westerly one." (1)

"The Ra-mythology [of Egypt] is that which describes [Ra’s ] course from west to east." (2) Ra, rising in the west, was called "Harakhte, only god, king of the gods; he riseth in the west." (3) However, some hymns were addressed to "Ra when he riseth in the Eastern part of heaven." (4)

Egyptian lore also knew of a "Horus of the West" and a "Horus of the East." (5) Horus was the planet Jupiter.

The expression found in Latin literature, Jupiter Dianus,(6) or two-faced, could be interpreted as denoting two motions of Jupiter, and eastward and a westward. This conforms to the same expression applied to the Sun where, as I endeavored to show, it denotes easterly and westerly movements of the luminary.(7)

The confinement of Saturn to Tartarus or the planet Saturn may show a relatedness to the ancients mistakenly believing that Saturn or the movement of Saturn in relation to Jupiter was somehow responsible for the impact.  If Saturn had swallowed Jupiter the ancients may have believed that there would not have been an impact.  Horus is not only Jupiter but the equivalent of Thor.  The stories relate to destruction, the story of destruction from a near earth impact. Abram and his family left Ur due to widespread famine and moved to Harran and then passed on to Egypt.  The meteorological effects that included the skies filled with dust from an air blast or impact as well as temperature changes may have shifted over the course of time and/or there were multiple impact events. The King of Salem, Melchizedek is a Christophany, an appearance of Christ in the Old Testament. He blessed Abraham and this promise that Abraham's descendents would not be subject to a near earth object impact is interesting.  It fits with the promise that Jesus will snatch up the gathering of believers when the time of the Tribulation is set to start.

Before Jacob set his head on the stone and dreamed of angels ascending and descending on a ladder the town was Bethul and afterward it was Bethel. Jacob was visited by the Angel of the LORD and this Angel is revealed to be the LORD, a Christophany, an appearance of the LORD as the Messiah in the Old Testament. The story of Jacob is a story of God bringing His influence and His ability to save people to bear on a place thought have been destroyed by the fiery destruction that comes with the impact of a near earth object.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

John 1:51

Jesus is Jacob's Ladder, He is salvation, the Salvation of Yahweh.  Salvation in this sense is from cosmic disaster, near earth object impact, the Great Destruction. The stone represents literally and figuratively the change from "the House of Destruction" or "House Destroyed by God" to the "House of God".  It is a declaration of the continuing role of God in His creation.  The ideas contained in naturalistic and deterministic origins of the creation of the universe to those of origins revealed directly by faith both have explanations of generation-regeneration and destruction. In the world of today mankind seems removed from any possibility of natural catastrophe that is local, regional or planetary in scope from a near earth object.  We have difficulty comprehending loss of life associated with more common events such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The impact of a piece of a comet or an asteroid has disrupted known civilizations for thousands of years in the past.

The Great Serpent and Saturn may have something in common.  Both may represent an observable event, the first being the asteroid hit that nearly wiped out all life on the planet 12,500 years ago associated with the Draco constellation, the second being Saturn and Jupiter aligned in the event described in the Book of the Cave of Treasures and the Cursing of Agade.  As time went on the original meaning may have been replaced by the allegory that came to be associated with the symbols.

The Most Holy God is named, by the Assyrians, from that particular star of the seven by which mankind are governed, which is moved in the highest orb.

Tacitus

The upshot is that the destructive symbolism, the planets representing the destruction by alignment at the time of the destruction, and the gods associated with the destruction are unified in this one event or series of events we now know were near earth objects that slammed into the earth in this part of the world. Jupiter and Enlil would then be the gods associated with the "House of Destruction". This destruction from impact(s) was at a specific location(s) and was found in ancient times by people in the aftermath. No doubt there were some survivors at far enough distance that went to see what the huge noise of the impact and the air blast with the observable explosion in the distance was all about. That place representing a memorial to the destruction/impact event contemporaneous with Abram must have been well-known as is evidenced by the fact it was a memorial termed the House of Destruction and House Destroyed by God. It represented the place that began the trouble which wiped out the Akkadian civilization and forced Abram to move several times with his family. Velikovsky and others point out that in the pagan world of the time that  Bel, Enlil, Jupiter, Horus of the West (the direction from which the bolide came from) and Marduk were seen as the destroyers associated with the planets, stars, weather, and the sun. Thor is related to Horus, throwing his trusty hammer that returns to his hand, lightning bolts bursting from his anger, and being a destroyer in the final showdown at the end of time killing Odin (Eden). The planets and stars were in a particular alignment, the weather was affected for years, decades or longer, and the sun was initially blotted out during daylight hours for some time after impact. In the Cursing of Agade this is plain enough that not only were the gods mixed up in this event but that it was due in part to a reprisal for the King of Agade defiling a temple of a rival city. The author seems to allow that the common people that were taken by surprise by the impact and its results blamed it on the King. The King had a dream seven years before revealing what was to happen. From his point of view it was a fait d' accompli and his efforts were to stall it or prevent it. His efforts failed and not enough food stocks were laid back to deal with little to no crop production for years to decades. Most likely the atmospheric effects lasted more than 100 years as to the ability to raise crops in that part of the world.

The story of the effects of the impact event on the people in that part of the world is horrific. It had an effect on the morality of those involved where betrayal, murder, being conquered by a barbaric race of people known as Gutians, and the ruling class attacked all played out in real time with memorable results. Disease, famine, violence, and fear had to all take their toll on those unable to flee and those who chose not to flee. The destruction caused such emotion and overwhelming circumstances that some decided to feed themselves to the crocodiles, while others ate their relatives, children, and whoever they could catch. Some people saw the handwriting on the wall and chose to flee as is the case of Abram and his family.

The King of Agade had a dream that was so overwhelming due to the destruction that was to come that he held his head in his hand, an astonishing thing for a leader never heard of before. The event came and went affecting life in Mesopotamia, Haran, Canaan, and possibly to Egypt. Some researchers record that not only was there a near earth object impact event there but other continents also experienced them as well. Timo Niroma covers this for instance as do many others. Not only this but Sodom and Gomorrah were wiped out by an impact event in what is now the southern part of the Dead Sea after the impact that occurred when Abram lived in Ur. Authors as recent as Ovid attribute the destruction with mankind devolving to the point where cannibalism and homosexuality become practiced. In fact the impact event discussed presently can be seen to relate to the Great Flood in that the ancients related the gods getting fed up with the evil being practiced down here on earth. Child sacrifice to idols, cannibalism, sex with demons, and homosexuality have a relatedness to destruction at points in world history such as the event in Akkad and the one preceding it known as Noah's Flood and the impact of 12,500 years ago.

The significance of the dream of Jacob where he saw Angels ascending and descending upon the Ladder is singular and marks a major demarcation of world history.  It is related to The House of Destruction and the impact event(s) because it was at this very spot there was the memorial called by that name. God gave Jacob this dream establishing the Salvation of Yahweh for all time, replacing this spot memorializing destruction as the place to remember Salvation was offered instead by Yahweh. It underscores the fact that evils revealed as such by Yahweh have destructive results that are tangible and yield destruction. The Chaldees not only rebelled against God after the Flood of Noah but bragged about it. The rebellion quickly devolved into practices that were evil, abominations, apostasy, and cause devoted destruction--holocausts--impact events or other means of stopping the practices when people refuse to listen and repent--change their minds as reflected by giving up those evils. The overwhelming evidence points to destruction being associated with evil on many levels.

The original mission of the Holy Angels of God was to protect the inhabitants of earth. Would that include preventing the impact of near earth objects and people would have known this at some point in the past? In The Book of Genesis, Chapter Six the Angels abandoned their mission and had sex with humans producing monstrous offspring. Ovid notes that things got so out of hand that people were slaughtering each other and served those killed for dinner. The Giants were involved in all of this idolatry and rebellion against the gods of the pagans and the God of the Bible. So too, The Book of the Cave of Treasures attributes destruction with this kind of thing after Noah's Flood. Could it be that the prevention of  impact events were not carried out due to a judgment of God. The Angels who rescued Lot and his family knew what was coming. God told Abraham what was coming. Abraham would have known that the devastation would be severe due to his own experience and at least convinced God to spare Lot and his family. Would the King of Akkad have been successful had he convinced the people to straighten up and stop the evil practices right after his dream? We do not know for a fact that this would have been the case since it was not the case. We can infer the Grace of God and His Salvation being active in the rescue of Lot as well as the rescue of Noah and his family. In fact, some people were spared from Noah's Flood in places all over the world. The Bible takes the time to point out that Noah was spared because he did not participate in the violence that gripped people all around him and was mocked for it. Neither he nor his family members have anything to do with the social and sexual liaisons with rebelling fallen angels. He was deemed Righteous and the Noahic Covenant was established for all of the earth through him. The next covenant to be established was through Abraham who was called a friend of God. Jacob was given the dream that revealed the pre-incarnate Christ at the top of the ladder and we learn in Scripture later that Jesus Christ is in fact the Ladder, the Way to God and Heaven, that He is the Salvation offered by God as well as the agency of Salvation. The Bible records how to be friends with God and the significance of Salvation. Salvation is being reconciled to God. Salvation is the opposite of the wrath of God. Salvation is the way out of destruction. Abraham and his family were spared, they were chosen by God.

Being a part of the kingdom of this world with the Prince of the Power of the Air in charge of things on a personal or national or global scale leads to destruction. God will let us have destruction by our choices, although He has the Way out of it recorded throughout the Bible. Is the judgment, The Cursing of Agade simply God no longer restraining evil, physical harm, destruction, famine, disease, and death? The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit will no longer restrain evil at the point Tribulation comes. In the 20th century evil had a field day. Two world wars, disease, famine, poverty, genocide, and evil were rife. There were 60 million casualties in as a direct result of WWII alone. The Soviet Union got the lion's share with 30 million. The deaths of their own people due to executions and the Gulag amounted to about 50 million over the history of the October Revolution from 1917 to 1922 and the resulting Soviet Union from 1922 until December 31, 1991. The 21st century has not started well and seems a continuation of pain on a global scale. Jesus said that Salvation comes from the Jews. Odd that the terrorism began in earnest in 2001 began with suicide bombings in Israel. An effective suicide bombing series is now known as 911 and the international community has prevented many lesser incidents, though Israel is still under assault. Over 1000 incidents have been prevented by the FBI with the international community providing vital help or being exclusively responsible for it. It appears that terrorism is likely to continue. Did God take His hand off the United States on 911? Will we see judgment soon as the Tribulation? Some people think so. The Bible Codes suggest 2004 as the likely year and have an interesting question with this date, "will you prevent it?"

I am a scientist and realize that people will use science or any kind and amount of facts to go into denial. The King of Agade knew what was coming and for all we know he might have gotten the correlation between inhuman acts against other humans in his kingdom and the coming near earth object impact. Perhaps he was ignored and tore down gutters in a neighboring town as a last ditch effort. The rationalist, scientist, non-believer thinks that God either does not exist or the overwhelming evidence throughout all of history can be tossed off. The Bible says otherwise. People go to great lengths to prove God wrong, the Bible wrong, and His people wrong. I submit to you that the alternate explanations, no matter how grounded in science they may be change nothing. If God decides to stop restraining evil by His Holy Spirit all the evils befalling us will have scientific explanations. The hail of molten metals and rocks will have a certain size and the demographics of fleeing populations could be studied. The Bible has told us how many will be wiped out by the series of judgments already. based on the current world population of about 6 billion people, 3 billion will be killed over a period of time less than a decade. I understand that this is depressing to contemplate. Some Christians attack the Bible and reject the testimony that is plainly there because it is apocalyptic portions of the Bible as if that is bad somehow. I notice that the apocalyptic prophecies of the Old Testament came to pass despite the fact that most people decided the prophets were crazy and went on worshipping idols and crying over Tammuz. The fact is they were the ones who were crazy. Are we so crazy that we will ignore God, reject His testimony to us and refuse Salvation because our level of comfort needs to be maintained? We have been watching the wrath of Satan diligently and measuring the effects, sprinkling a bit of speculation, explanation, astrology and astronomy in with the horrific numbers here and there. It has not changed fact and will not change fact. This is all still going on today. The wrath of God is coming, no matter what you call it or how much it might be measured or chanted about. Is it 2004, 2005, 2006? Will we change it, can we change it? Do you think tearing down the gutters on a big building in a country we don't like to allow the rain to return to the sky will do the trick as the King of Agade did? Bombing each other silly will not stop the wrath of God from coming, and in fact might kick things off.

As a graduate student doing research I noticed that the cycles of extinctions and speciation throughout the history of the earth is a measurable fact. Geologic Systems are based on major unconformable boundaries recognized worldwide where areas that were once land become seas and areas that were seas are land. These boundaries are on the order of hundreds to less than a hundred million years. Major extinctions that are on the order of the extinction of the dinosaurs with speciation renewing is on the order of tens of millions of years. The kind of extinctions of a major event associated with the Milky Way getting to an explosive phase is on the order of tens of thousands of years with the lower numbers less than 20,000 and the upper about 30,000 years. Minor events such as the one in Russia in 1912 that only wipe out regions of a continent likely occur on the order of hundreds of years. The kind that wiped out Akkadian civilization and plunged Egypt into the dark centuries occur on the order of centuries above and below a thousand years. Human lifetimes may go past the century mark. So much for measuring.

Someone who follows Jesus would agree that the wrath of God is coming. People who may or may not believe in God or Jesus are expecting it although they put it in different terms. It is looking more likely to some people, but that is not the deciding factor. Moses outlined the blessings and curses based on the covenant with God established when the Law was established. On the one hand the Children of Israel would have what seem to be unlimited blessings. Changing the ordinances, transgressing the laws and breaking the covenant was promised to be met with the wrath of God. The judgment of places like Tyre operated on a different basis. El started out being the God of people there and after awhile other gods started to be worshipped. Significantly, the sun and other parts of creation were worshipped. There is a revival of that today on a seemingly small scale. Someone rejected about half of the witness of the Bible as being meaningful because he felt that the message of destruction was too depressing. The majority of the Bible is dedicated to the subject of Salvation and God being the Deliverer, our Salvation. A major part, the major part of the mission of those who follow Christ is to combat the Prince of the Power of the Air, offering Salvation to any who will listen. Does it seem logical that if the people of the earth deny the Messiah, refuse help, turn our backs on God and mock God that He is likely to remove the Holy Spirit's restraining power over evil? If things were allowed to become evil in an unchecked manner by us, does it not seem as though things would in fact become more evil. Whether I were a believer or not it seems that I would be looking for a way to stop evil. If you are one called by His Name, humble yourself, pray, seek the LORD's Face, and forsake evil ways. If there were a revival, maybe we would be able to have a stay on the wrath of God. I pray for revival realizing there is no guarantee of what we might do.
