Police throw book at woman for reading
Brockville, ON – An American woman driver (did she ever have a chance?) has been charged with careless driving, not because she could care less but because she was driving the 416 while reading a book!
An officer spotted her car meandering along the four-lane highway and, upon pulling alongside, noticed she was enjoying a novel.
“I taught to meself, ‘dis woman is crazy’, when I first seen her dair,” reported Cst. Robert Garpike of the Ontario Provincial Police. “So I wonders, ‘How da hell am I’s going to git her to pull over?’
After a few minutes, Bettina Smallwood, 37, of Phoenix, N.Y., noticed Cst. Garpike’s cruiser and decided to stop.
“I was totally engrossed in the book. I mean it was a real page-turner. When I make bail, I’m going to recommend it to Oprah!”
The OPP have not released the title of the item that Smallwood perused at 100Km/h but speculation is that it may have been a pamphlet of metric conversions, US/Canadian currency exchange rates or even a French/American translator.
One anonymous speculator postulated, “If she didn’t know the language, how could she speak obnoxiously loud in our restaurants?” |
