Habitats of Style

 

Grade Level:                    One or Two

 

Subject Integration:         Science

 

ISTE Objective(s):           1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

 

Instruction:

 

1.   Show students a picture of a city street where a jewelry robbery is just happening.   Only allow them to see the picture for about 30 seconds.

 

2.      Then ask students to describe exactly what they saw, as the police are trying to find out what happened.   Ask them questions, like what street? What direction? What was he wearing? Students will realize they didn’t notice everything.

 

3.      Show students the picture again and see how correct they were. 

 

4.      Have students observe a natural habitat.  Take a walk in the desert, or in a forrest, allow students to take paper and write down things that they see.  This could be drawings or words.

 

5.      Back in the classroom have students, in small groups, use a multimedia program to design their own computer version of the habitat.  Students need to construct pictures and use descriptive words to help others get a good idea of what this place is like.

 

6.      Students can also do some research on their habitat by using the internet,  electronic encyclopedias, books, and videos. 

 

7.      Have students share these habitats with students from another part of the country.  Then students can compare and contrast how their habitat is different from others around the country or world.

 


Alternative Instruction:

 

·        Rather than doing habitats, students can study their community or city.

 

·        Students could also print some of their pictures of their habitats for a classroom bulletin board on this habitat.
