Alphabetic Animals
1. Students begin by talking about some of their favorite animals, and as each animal is discussed also discuss the first letter and spelling of the animal.
2. Students will create a statement like “A is for Alligator” “B is for Bear” “C is for Cat” and create a second statement describing something about their animal. For PreK, something as simple as “A Dog goes Woof” to a 2nd grader stating “A Dog is a canine similar to a wolf. They walk on four legs. There are many breads of dogs. My favorite is ….”
3. Students then in a program like MS Word or Kid Pix create a page with pictures about here animal. They will use Word Art (MS Word), or decorate a large version of their letter. This decorated version of their letter will be one of the main parts of their page.
4. Students will also find a picture on the Internet, CD encyclopedia, or scan one into a scanner. This picture will then be added to their page.
5. Students will type in their statements about their animals to add to their page.
6. Finally when students have finished creating their page, they will put each of their papers together alphabetically into an animal encyclopedia.
7. Students that wish to put together another page are encouraged to do so.
Alternative Instruction:
· As an alternative to this, students could put together an encyclopedia of fruits and vegetables for a health unit.
· Students could put together an encyclopedia of famous Americans for a social studies unit.
· For students in a younger grade, this could be a book of counting, show a picture of one thing, with the number one on the page. A big number two with a picture of 2 things on the page. And then 3 things, 4 things, and so on.
