SYRIAN (ITA) "Sadness Deluxe" (2000) [Stato Nascente] 42.10"
What a surprise! A couple of years ago I discovered the fantastic and original solo-project of Lorenzo Bettelli called Godcrucifier during a little as well as underground festival of mostly brutal-death metal bands (!).
Instead, just a couple of days ago I received a promo-CD from the Italian label Stato Nascente: that's the new project (and another clever proof of his ability!) of such a talentous guy. With Syrian L. Bettelli is still under the experimental-elethronic influences of his previous work but he surely arrived to compose more refined melodies or better as the title seems to suggests he tells us his music with "sadness deluxe". This album also contains more dark-soft structures that sometimes remind me Depeche Mode like in " Frozen Frames" and he's also able to take some good teachments from the last Paradise Lost: a not easy work if you only think how this band is playing nowadays (I'm not really a fan of Paradise Lost when it comes to the extremely "pop" -and not "dark" at all- elements of their last sound!)
The only point that not completely fulfils my expectations is the use of the vocals (both female and male) which in some parts should be a bit more "charismatic".
Really remarkable, instead, is a sign of more ambient melodies in the intro/outro.
Of course, I also appreciated the allusion to the particular experimental-elettronic melodies of the last work under the monicker of Godcrucifier called "Intergalactic Christ" like, for example, in the "In Remembrance": a shady memory of what has been... Besides this, "Sadness Deluxe" is a journey in a different galaxy that I guess will also give you different emotions.
