Herman Glopp and his wife Zelda began their careers as time-traveling teacher's aides for a pair of social studies teachers at Vandalia-Butler High School, Lenny Maenza and Lonny Hathaway. They would travel to different periods in United States history and participate in minor roles in historical events, such as Herman being a soldier in World War I, or Zelda becoming a stop along the Underground Railroad which helped bring runaway slaves to the north. They would dress up in costumes of whatever historical event the "Sacred Team" of Maenza and Hathaway were teaching about at a certain time during the school year and relate their own experiences, in order to give the students a first-hand account of the events.
However, Herman always knew in the back of his mind that this job would not last for very long, as Mr. Maenza and Mr. Hathaway would eventually retire. But Herman did have another passion, he always wanted to be a professional wrestler. So at the same time that he was "hop-scotching" through time to take part in US historical events for his teacher's aide job with the "Sacred Team", he would also travel to different parts of the world in time in order to train for the day that he could become a wrestler. When the day finally came that the "Sacred Team" decided that they were ready to retire, Herman travelled forward in time to begin his new wrestling career, with Zelda at ringside serving as his valet. He signed with the Heavenly Wrestling Association in 2114 in order to gain his in-ring experience. He hopes that one day he will have what it takes to make it to the GWF or even the GWF-Z.
(Lenny Maenza and Lonny Hathaway really were social studies teachers at Butler High School. They taught social studies to the senior class when I attended during the 1984-85 school year. "Herman Glopp" was, in reality, a stuffed dummy that they periodically brought to class from time to time dressed in costumes of whatever historical period they were teaching about at the time. It was a unique teaching tool at the time. My Herman Glopp character is a tribute not only to that stuffed dummy, but to Mr. Maenza and Mr. Hathaway, who were not only good, creative teachers but were downright funny, as well. They're both retired from teaching now and live down the street from each other, which coincidentally, is only 3 or 4 streets away from where I currently reside.--DPB)
