Here are just a few interesting facts about the film and its director,
Peter Weir.

  • The scene where Todd throws up in the snow at the end, was originally meant to be a shot of him throwing up in the toilet, but because it had snowed over night they changed it
  • The film was filmed around St Andrews in Vermont, Canada
  • The tune that Keating is always whistling or humming is the "Rule Britannia" which was the tune that the QE2 was sent out with
  • Mr John Keating has been named after the famous English poet John Keats (1795-1821)
  • Another reoccuring tune in the film is of Beethovens 9th Symphony "Joyful Joyful, we adore thee, God of Glory..."
  • Peter Weir uses music as a directing tool. On the set of 'Dead Poets' he always had a tape deck at his side and he played a lot of Irish music, which fit the Celtic-Boarding-school atmosphere
  • Some parts of Keatings lines were not in his script - he made bits up as he went
  • Other films that Peter Weir directed include: 'Count Vim's Last Exercise', 'Michael' (1969), 'Homesdale' (1971), 'The Cars That Ate Paris' (1974), 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', 'The Plumber', 'Gallipoli', 'Green Card' (1990), 'Fearless' (1993) and 'The Truman Show' (1998)
