Conditions Cold NW wind touching gale force. Sea state was rough with a big swell (6-8 feet). The wind was blowing from left to right as you face the sea (a real pain).
Tide

03:58 low water - 10:02 high water - 16:34 low water - 22:31 high water

Sun rise 08:15 - Sun set 16:44

Bait Frozen commercial bait mackerel from "The Bait Shop, Newquay"
Tackle

I usually fish two rods, an old Daiwa Moonraker with an Abu 6000c (30 years old) and an Abu Atlantic with a Abu 6000.

Main reel line 15 lb with a 30 lb shock leader.

Single 2/0 blue hook on a short 8 & 12 inch trace (two rods!).The trace was 3 feet above the gripper weights (4.5 oz and 6 oz).

The 4.5 oz weights only just held bottom, what with the cross wind and all.

Species
Whiting

Quite A few of these, all on mackerel. As the tide increased so did the size of the whiting.

Little ones up to 8 inches went back with as little damage as possible.

Three 12-13 inches and one very big one 16.5 inches, best this year so far! After high tide the whiting seemed to melt away with a few tiny ones getting stuck on the bait. (Photo.)

Pouting

Two, One 11 inches and one whale, a monster 18 inches with a good 5 inch between the dorsal fin and vent, this fish was almost 3 inches thick. My best pouting from the fly cellars so far. One hell of a fish.
Three bearded rockling

A few of these appeared throughout the night, almost always on lug as bait. Now as I had no lug I was only a spectator at the appearances.

Cod

I was about to give up and go home. It was almost low tide, I was cold, the wind had not given up when a small tug, followed by two more. A tiny cod, all of 6 inches if that, but a cod!

So if any mag says good Cod from the fly cellers they lie big time.

There may be cod from the headland but in this weather only people who want to get killed go there on their own.
