As many from the UK will know, there have been serious reports of large cats roaming the British countryside. Some described as Pumas, Leopards, Lynxs, and some not even really fitting the description of a cat. Many have attributed this influx of reports to the Dangerous wild animals Act, introduced in 1976. It strengthened laws on keeping exotic animals as pets and ultimately meant that many owners 'disposed' of their big cats into the countryside. In January 2000, one man nationally admitted to doing this in the seventies. With this as evidence, the chances that this is the case are high. Not everyone however is convinced. Another theory is that domestic cats have been interbreeding with the known feral cats such as the Scottish Wild and creating a new species of Hybrid. If you aren't persuaded by either of these, there is a theory that these cats have always roamed the British Isles along with bears and wolves, and never actually died out but are gradually making a comeback. The UK is not the only place to have reported sightings however, the people of Australia are also seeing big cats. |

What do I do if I have a close encouter with one? With sightings on the increase its a good idea to know what to do if you encounter one for real. If the animal is straight in front of you back away slowly. Do not run and do not turn your back on it. Do not make any sudden noises or movements. Avoid eye contact. If the animal stays and gets aggressive, try to make yourself look big and prod its nose with a stick or umbrella. Only get physical as a last resort, a big cat could cause real damage or kill you. |
