Released at the start of this year around mid February came the news of a Possible re-make of "The Silence of the Lamb's" prequel "Manhunter" (know in book form only as "Red Dragon").
Screenwriter John Gilstrap visited The College of William and Mary to give a lecture about writing as a career in Hollywood. During his stay at the college he revealed news of three new projects underway, one included a re-make of the "The Silence of the Lambs" prequel "Manhunter" (Red Dragon).
He mentioned that he had just done a script for a new film version of "Manhaunter" (Known as "Red Dragon in book form). It was the first book written by Thomas Harris to introduce the Evil Cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecter to the world). It was also revealed that Dino De Laurentis was to produce this new version of the film that included the characters Will Graham (Jack Crawford’s protégé) and Francis Dolarhyde (sexually frustrated serial killer). Dino De Laurentis produced both the original "Manhunter" ("Red Dragon") and is currently developing the page turning book, "Hannibal", into the most anticipated movie this year.
Gilstrap did say that he personally didn't like Manhunter, but wasn't sure what De Laurentis thought. Perhaps Dino is trying to cash in on the present resurgence of interest in the Lecter character. Also since Manhunter (Red Dragon) doesn't involve Clarice Starling, he can avoid all the casting problems there and focus on getting Hopkins. He even stated that Hopkins may be the cause for a remake for another reason since Brian Cox played Lecter in Manhunter ("Red Dragon"), and perhaps De Laurentis is looking to create a new version with greater consistency with "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal", in terms of casting.
Since Hopkins has already signed up for a second helping, why not the entrée?
