An introduction to the study of language, its scope and objectives, its methods and scientific procedures, and its principal subdivisions.  The development of Malay language.  Malay phonology.

Reading and writing simple Jawi script to train students to be literate in Jawi.  Practice in higher levels of speaking skills such as debating, public speaking, formal speeches.  Recitation of old and new forms of poetry.

Introduces the core areas in the study of human language.  The classification of the sounds of Malay and their use in basic transcription.  The concept of phoneme.  Morphology and the analysis of the components of Malay words.  Syntax, word classes and the form and function of sentential constituents.  Exploration of different varieties of language and patterns of language.

Development of effective communication skills in using Malay in formal and informal situations.  The new pronunciation system (sebutan baku).  Practice in speaking skills such as debating, public speaking.  Recitation of old and new forms of poetry.
