A NEW rotary engine now being developed by Rambler marks the first time in recent years that Detroit has given serious consideration to this unique type of power plant. The rotary concept is not new in itself. However, rotaries previously have been confined to Europe and such eastern-seaboard centers as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Now that Rambler has stepped into the field it finally seems possible - or even likely - that we will see an American car with a rotary engine.

ENGINE OPERATION Intake lobe moves out of cavity with intake valve open, drawing in fresh air-fuel mixture.
COMPRESSION both valves are closed. Next lobe moves in, compressing mixture.
POWER spark plug ignites mixture. Heat expands gases and pressure drives lobe outward, turning crank. EXHAUST Lobe enters the cavity, exhaust valve opens. Sweeping out the burned exhaust gases and cycle begins again.
