A word from the editor

Greetings, Kindred Spirits, and welcome to the new issue of the Cone!

It has been deemed that the time is ripe for all of us to come together and to celebrate each other, to heal each other, to exchange ideas, random musings, dreams, experiences, aspirations and the various creative urges that have been bubbling under the surface seeking release. As we are nearing the Millennium, the spirits are soaring and coming together in the great synergy of Awakening. The Year of the Dragon challenges us to come out of our respective lairs and to spread our wings in the knowledge that we are powerful beings indeed, capable of healing the Earth Mother and the creatures that share in her bounty with us. The return of the Sun God/Goddess during Summer Solstice inspires us to rise above our limitations in trust in ultimate wisdom of Creation.

First, please allow me to elaborate upon the title of this publication. The cone of power, a familiar term to practitioners of many different spiritual traditions, represents the pooling of power, knowledge and resources, the protective shield of energy, and is a very ancient magickal symbol and tool. From the pyramids of Ancient Egyptians to the cone-shaped teepees of First Nations' to the stereotypical witches' hats, this had been an enduring part of the collective subconscious since times immemorial. (And, by the way, mathematicians sometimes define the cone as being a pyramid with an infinite number of planes.)

"The chant begins as a lone crooning, a deep vibration barely heard. One by one, voices take it up... It rises, an eerie nonharmony. The air seems to thicken, to dance with electric sparks that begin to fly, circle spin, careen madly in the centre of the circle... The light begins to spin, a shining wheel of breath, turning and turning. Voices rise higher. The light spirals upward, faster, faster, as it narrows toward the top. The sounds are indescribable; the voices are the shrieking wind, the howling of wolves, the cries of tropical birds, the swarming of bees, the sigh of receding waves. The cone builds and builds a pulsing spiral, a unicorn's horn, rare and marvellous. Its tip cannot be seen... The cone flies off, an arrow loosed to do its work... They have sent The Cone of Power". Starhawk "The Spiral Dance"

One of the greatest cones of power I have been privileged to witness had been at the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, at a powwow. Along with about five hundred other people, I was dancing in a green field, surrounded by ten groups of drummers, with the ground vibrating under my bare feet. Tired yet exhilarated, I'd decided to take a little breather, and went back to the edge of the circle. I happened to look back, and then I saw it: a beautiful, translucent and glowing cone of light was forming over the field and holding everyone in its embrace.

And that is what we are aiming for with this publication: to provide a safe, supportive environment for everyone who is on the Path to greater enlightenment, and needs to express their creativity, the teachings they have received along the way, and the visions and the dreams they would like to share. So, please feel free to contribute as you may wish, your feedback is to be honoured and treasured.

Blessed Be!
