Lorac

You decide to visit Lorac. His path seems long at a glance, but it's actually not too bad. It's a quick stroll through a heavily wooded area, with a myriad of birds zipping about overhead. You can almost feel the wind of their wings on your face, and you're awestruck by the melodic birdcalls that ring in your ears.

As you walk deeper into the glade, the birds become even more numerous. They perch on your head and shoulders, chirping and preening your ears. Not knowing quite what to think, you turn another bend.

You're met with an amazing sight. The ground is practically covered with feeding birds. Birdseed falls from the sky like rain, its source the eagles that circle, carrying bags of seed and dumping them down. More eagles and hawks sit on the ground, seemingly unconcerned about the countless little dinners hopping around them. Their attention is focused on one thing and one thing only - a great gryphon, sitting in a golden throne amidst all the mayhem.

Birds almost cover the gryphon as well, warbling and singing their praise to the magnificent creature. A blood-red pendant hangs around the gryphon's neck, making you think abruptly of royalty.

"Silence!" the gryphon booms, and every single bird stops chirping and freezes. The silence is deafening, only broken by the pitter patter of falling seeds.

"Greetings," the gryphon booms again. "What brings you to our bird kingdom?"

"Ah...aah..." you stammer, suddenly nervous. "I-I come as an explorer of Dracogrex, sir."

The gryphon eyes you appraisingly, then nods. Allowing the colorful birds to hop off of him he rises, and gingerly leaps down from the throne, being careful not to trod on any of his subjects. The sea of birds parts in a fluent, practiced motion as the gryphon walks, showing still-grassy ground beneath the gryphon's feet. It stands a few feet away from you, when it stops.

"Again, I extend my greetings to you, traveler," he begins. "I am Lorac, Lord of the Birds. I welcome you to your glade."

"Th-thank you, sir," you say, bowing as an afterthought.

Lorac returns the bow, surprising you. "It has been many suns since we last had a human in our midst. Amaryllis knows quite well that we can take care of ourselves, you see, so she often leaves us alone to do what we do. We do enjoy the presence of you explorers, so it's a treat when anyone visits."

"Well, I've never seen anything like this place," you reply, looking around again. "It's...beautiful."

"Yes, almost every bird in the entire realm lives here. As you can see," he says, smirking, "that's a large population. But my loyal eagle help me feed them. They aren't carnivorous," he adds, as if to re-assure the surrounding birds. "They eat seed like the rest of us."

"Amazing," you murmur.

"Thank you," Lorac replies, bowing again. "I'm sure we would love for you to stay, but you have a big realm to explore and many interesting individuals to meet. I appreciate your visit. I hope you enjoyed yourself."

Assuring Lorac that you enjoyed yourself very much, you wave to all the birds, and return to the signpost with birdsong in your ears.
