How To Sex Asian Arowanas |
Sexual differences of Asian Arowanas are indiscernible in juvenile stage and become apparent after maturity is reached in about 3-4 years. Male posses slimmer and shallower body depth, bigger mouth and more intense colour then the females. The reasons for having wider mouth and deeper lower jaw in males are for eggs incubating purpose. The size of the males's head is realatively bigger. Male is more aggressive and leading in competition for food. A brooding male can be recognised by its remarkable brood pouch underside its mouth. These pictures below are a pair of Cross Back (Male: Crossback Blue Base, Female: E-taolong Bukit Mera Blue) that spawned uncessfully (eggs were eaten/not fertilized) last month in 400 gals aquarium. |

Breeding Pair (Chili Red - Crossback) Look from front view. Male (9 years old Crossback), Female (7 years old Chili red). This piar had spawned several times since last year, but so far the owner doesn't get any luck yet. The best way to distinguish Male and Female Arowanas from the front view, is the "V" shape of the bottom jaw of the Male (the Crossback in this case). |
