Rupert Giles is Buffy's watcher. He was sent to America from England. He cares for Buffy as if she were his own daughter.
Rupert doesn't really have a life outside of watching. When he started to get involved with Jenny Calendar Angelus came along and snappped her neck. However now with him being unemployed he has more time to get into hobbies.
Even though Giles isn't Buffy's watcher he still helps her with Sunnydale's demonic threat.
