Scholarship Fund Application Essay

For The Institute for Computer Studies.
By Craig Duffy - September 2000

A career in Information Technology?

The IT industry is an excellent industry to be in.  It is full of challenges and is always changing.  It is this need to constantly learn new things and implement new technologies that first attracted me to the industry.  I have always enjoyed working with computers and everything related to computers.

After I completed High School, I was looking into the computer industry, but chose a slightly different career path.  Mostly out of convenience at the time.  Over the past few years of working in the electronics industry, my desire to enter the IT industry became stronger.  I soon realized that I needed something a little more stimulating, something that would give me more of a sense of accomplishment.

I am the type of person who is always looking for ways to improve myself, both personally and professionally.  I need to be continually challenged and able to learn from new experiences and mistakes.  I believe I will find this in the IT industry.

From previous work experience, I have learned a lot about the business world.  Being a field service technician, I was able to learn how many different types of businesses work.  Working on point-of-sale and cash handling equipment gave me the unique opportunity to get a 'behind the scenes' view of how a particular business works. This experience has given me the ability to know what certain businesses are looking for and what they need to succeed.  I know that once I start working in the IT industry, I will be able to use my experiences and knowledge to create the best possible solutions for any type of business.

Another part of my desire to enter the IT industry is the fact that it is an excellent platform from which to branch into many different areas.  As long as I have the initial technical skills, there are so many different areas in which to fine tune and expand these skills to suit different purposes.  The need to learn new skills also increases with each new aspect of the industry.  With so many new businesses relying more and more on technology, there will be an endless supply of ideas and solutions.  It is my desire to always stay ahead of the technology, while providing fresh and creative solutions for every challenge that is put before me.

I believe that there will always be a need for qualified IT professionals.  It is a field that will continue to grow and being a part of that would be a great privilege.

Why I should be considered for a scholarship

I have always taken my education very seriously.  I take every opportunity I can to learn new things.  It is this drive for knowledge that has never allowed me to quit any of my endeavors, whether it be academic or professional efforts, or personal development.  I have dedicated most of my time to my work and try to experience and take advantage of as many different aspects of my work as possible.

I know that I have the qualities needed to become a successful IT professional.  I am very organized, I have good leadership and communication skills.  I have the logical and analytical skills as well as the creativity needed in this industry.  I would like to take advantage of any opportunity to improve my skills and make my road to success as easy as possible and closer to reality.

I knew what I wanted to do for a very long time.  I think this is different from a lot of people who are simply looking for a quick way to become a part of what they believe to be the current trend in career changes.  While this trend may be true, only a fraction of people possess the real skills, not the skills learned in a classroom, but the basic analytical and creative skills that either exist in a persons natural character or not.  I would like to be given the opportunity to make full use of these skills and be able to teach them to others.  I have much to contribute and I know this school can get me there.

When searching for a school to further my education, I was looking for one that I felt would benefit me the most. It had to have an excellent reputation and proven record of teaching the right skills to be successful in my new career.  I knew exactly what I wanted out of the program and what skills and technologies I needed to learn. The Institute for Computer Studies was the only school that I felt could provide me with all of the necessary tools to be successful in my new career.  I would really enjoy the opportunity to be a part of this institution and the chance to pursue a successful and rewarding career.
