While doing my study abroad in Urbino (Italy) in July of 2001, I took 4 days and went to Denmark. My trip got off to an interesting start.... On the 18th, a bunch of us went to Pesaro to go to the beach. When we got back, we grabed some dinner. Then I went up to my room to pack for my trip before going out that night. We all went out to celebrate Sam's 21st B-Day. Then after midnight it was my 25th B-Day. Let's just say that I was a little tipsy. We stayed @ The Gula until it closed, and then Danielle, Dom & I walked back to campus. It took us a little longer than expected though (HAHAH!) By the time we got back, it was late. The front desk guy couldn't stop laughing when he saw the three of us walk in. (You would too if you had been there). Danielle and I just HAD to watch the video of the walk home the minute we got back (go figure!). When I FINALLY got back to my dorm, it I had a little over an hour before I had to be to the bus station. Stupid me ... I fell asleep! I woke up (still "tispy") and realized that "Oh SH*T! I missed the bus!". I grabbed my stuff and flew to the front desk. (How I didn't fall on the stone spiral staircase is beyond me!) I had the front desk guy call a cab for me. The cabbie took me to the train station. I got there with 30 mins to spare. (WooHoo!)
The train ride was interesting in itself. I started to feel queasy, so I ran for the bathroom. Well, OF COURSE, someone was in there. I couldn't wait and wound up puking into the garbage. (LOL) When we got to the airport, I couldn't wait to get to the bathroom and dunk my head in the sink to try to force myself sober. (Well, that is to say, that when we're already sober we know this trick DOESN'T really work. But, when we're not, we hope to hell that it does!) OF COURSE, there were a bunch of people @ the sinks, and no room for me.
I went back out into the airport and hopped on the plane to København. I passed out twice on the plane. The guy next to me had to wake me up to tell me that the stewardess had given me my "meal".When we got to København I had 45 minutes until I had to be on the plane to Ålborg. I went to the duty free shop to buy shampoo, and toothpaste (because, in my drunken state, I left my plastic bag with that stuff in my dorm room! *LOL*). The lady @ the duty free shop told me that I couldn't buy anything there. I had to go to the OTHER duty free shop ... you know ... the one ALL the way on the OTHER side of the airport that was NO WHERE NEAR the terminal I had to leave from. So, I cursed her out in Italian and headed for the terminal. Luckily there was a little food stand like thing right there and I was able to buy a bottle of water. The guy didn't care what terminal I was flying out of.
The flight to Ålborg was short. When we landed, I tried not to trip down the stairs as I got out of the plane. Knowing the luck I'd been having so far that day, I didn't want to take my chances. However, with the luck I'd been having, it started to drizzle as I headed into the terminal.
When I got inside the terminal, I didn't even know where to even start looking for Anders. Then I heard a banging on the glass above me. There was Anders and Søs waving at me. Then it was off to get some food. It helped to settle my stomach. I needed it because of all the round-abouts. Apparently, Denmark went round-about happy some time ago, and I was a victim of it! (*lol*)
After we ate, we headed to the camp site. I finally got to meet Michael (after hearing so much about him). I also met Dan, Lars, Tom, Jens, and Mette. Later on that day Lone came to the camp site and I finally got to meet her.
The next day we all went into town. We walked & walked and then stopped at a café in the heart of the town. I called my family to let them know where I was and then I called Jim to wish him a happy anniversary. The guys stayed @ the café while the women went shopping. I was able to find a sleeping bag (*woohoo*).
Then it began to rain and we all ran inside to wait out the storm. After it stopped we went for pizza (which was an experience) and then headed back to the campsite. On the way back, we stopped on the beach. We all jumped in the water and splashed around for a bit. I was glad that I had left my sweater on the beach though. When we got back to the campsite, we found that the storm hit the campsite pretty hard. The tent that Lars, Lone & I shared was about 6cms under water! (*YIKES!*) My sweater was the ONLY dry thing I had!
After wringing out as much water as we could and salvaging as much as we could, we all squished into the remaining tents. Then next morning we headed for København. What an awesome car trip it was. We drove from Løkken to København. It took us a little bit longer than it should have. But we hit a bit of traffic and then made a few stops along the way. The first stop we had to make was right after we pulled out of the campsite. One of the tents flew out of the trailer (HAHAHA). Then we stopped at a very busy gas-station/convinience store. Someone bought bumperstickers and put then on Mik's car.
It was a really quiet kind of place. Across from Lone's grandparent's house, there was a field that we all just hung out by while we waited. It was really pretty, especially when a suttle breeze went through. The wheat would start dancing in the sun
After Lone came back out (carrying two bags of potatoes??) we all piled back into the cars and turned around. It was pretty interesting with the trailer hitched to the back of Mik's car. It didn't take long to get out of the town and back on the road to København though. There were a handfull of houses and even less amount of stores. It was tiny. It was quaint. But, as the name says, I wouldn't want to live there during the winter months.
Next we stopped to wait for the ferry. Lone, Søs, Tom & I sat on top of the trailer for a while. That was when Mik noticed the bumperstickers that "someone" (NOT ME!)put on his car. (hehehe) Then we piled into the cars when they started loading the ferry. Dan's car was let onto the ferry, but Mik's wasn't (*Eeek!*). But once we explained that we were following Dan, they let us on. Tom professed our love to the lady at the docks ("Vi elsker dig!"). The car fit, but the trailer was a tight squeeze.
Once we got to København, we unloaded everything from the cars & trailer and said our goodbyes. Anders, Søs & I hopped into a cab and headed back to the appartment. We had to hang my clothes all over the place to dry. We took some to a laundry place so that I'd have something dry to wear that night. Some drunk guy kept coming in to chat and invited us to a bar. We declined. Then he handed me a match. I don't know why though. We went back to the appartment to get ready. Then we went to meet up with part of the camping group at the bar (Mouse & Elephant). And, yes the beer really DOES come out of the Elephant's snout! (*lol*).
But, what I will remember most of all, is spending 4 great fun-filled days with my best friend. Søde ... jeg løfte ... sommer 2003! Al 2 år jeg går til Europa.
