About Us. We are a small Welsh Target Archery Club that formed in 1962. We meet all year round and are based at the gymnasium of St. Cyres' Comprehensive School in Penarth during the winter months. For the summer season we use the school field at the Dinas Powys Annexe of St. Cyres'. Club night is Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. We are all Target archers, and members currently shoot recurve and compound style, although our Chairman, Roger, is seriously tempted to shoot through the Longbow. One member shoots American Flatbow, and our secretary has now purchased a flatbow to bend as an alternative to his recurve. At present, only one member is shooting competitively. Kevin, our Records Officer and Coach, has achieved reasonable success having been a member of the Glamorgan Development Squad during 1999/2000, and a member of the Welsh Training Squad in 2000/2001. He is also a member of the current Welsh Squad, 2001/2002. Due to continued disability problems he has now converted to Compound unlimited and has gained numerous Welsh and County records since taking up this new style of bow. Kevin has completed his Coach upgrade course, and along with two new members who have attained their Leader certificates, is looking forward to the club getting some new members on which to practice their newly gained skills. Facilities and Fees. At the Penarth venue we are only able to shoot the 20 yard and 18 metre distances, which are fine for the indoor season, but our outdoor venue can cope with all the distances shot. The field quality is very good, although sometimes a trifle windy, but we can have as much access as we want during the school holidays, and throughout the year at weekends. We have yet to brave the elements to shoot outdoors during the winter months, but some of us were hardy enough to do that a few years ago at our old outdoor venue. Club Fees are currently £60.00 per year for seniors, which includes affiliation fees to G.N.A.S; Glamorgan County Archery Association, and Welsh Archery Association. This includes the recent fee increase by G.N.A.S. There is also a £2.00 per week "target fee". Visiting archers are welcome to shoot with us at a fee of £5.00 per session. We have one Coach at present, and two Archery Leaders, though most members are capable of teaching beginners. We DO NOT advocate the purchase of any equipment until beginners have, at least, learned the basics of archery, and therefore we provide all the necessary equipment for learners. Beginners courses can be arranged for individuals or groups at a fee of £25.00. per person, for 5 lessons. Please ask for details, if required. Any Juniors MUST have a parent/guardian STAY with them during the lessons. E-Mail Kevin at: Dragonflight52@aol.com or telephone: Cardiff (029) 2051 5923. |
