Song of Dragontamer

Open handed, she walks the river
Her thoughts collected, eyes at rest,
singing to the rolling currants
waiting calmly for the test.

Dragontamer by the water
listens close for signs of life;
she's on a mission from a master
prove herself without a fight.

Her green eyes flaring, scanning forrest;
same shades of jungle as they may be.
There must be something, something out there
Something she has failed to see.

A north wind carries water; foaming.
River's ending soon, she knows.
Deep inside her, throat is cracking,
something's changing, something glows.

From a patch of forest pine trees,
a new light shines out from that path.
She feels the same light grow within her,
taking on it's painful wrath.

Dragontamer's eyes grow weary,
her frame goes limp beneath her weight.
And a grand beast enters from the forest
full of anger, full of hate.

She looks him over; a spiny dragon,
fire lizard twice her size
and she knows her purpose, knows her mission
with one deep look into his eyes.

Dragontamer holds her hand out,
tears streak down her gentle face,
her curls of chocolate hair fall about
only adding to her grace.

The fire lizard rears up at her
then falls back down upon his feet
and watches Dragontamer's movements
while both their souls all at once meet.

And Dragontamer feels his sorrow,
she feels his fire, feels his pain.
She stands before him open handed,
he understands her, he is tame.

Because she took away his fury
and showed no fear within her heart,
she passed the test and tamed the dragon
proving her talent, proving her art.

She walks now slowly by that river,
a fire lizard at her feet,
and all of the beasts of the animal kingdom
she can tame and she can keep.
