This is an alternative ending to my fic "Eleanor Rigby". My friend Duophile didn't like they way I put her handkerchiefs into use, and so she wanted to write a happy ending for this one ^___^
So, this is not by Leena, but Duophile!

ELEANOR RIGBY: ALTERNATIVE ENDING by Duophile

It was New Year's Eve and Heero had decided to go to a church. He knew that he was probably going to be alone since he had chosen the small church outside the city centre. It suited him just fine. He didn't truly believe in God, but he had decided to let his dreams come true for a little while.

He knew that Duo was Catholic, so in a way being inside a church would bring him closer to Duo. It made perfect sense to Heero, although a small voice in his head still had doubts about it. But he was going to try. A stifled chuckle escaped Heero's lips. Maybe he was really going insane...

It was peaceful inside the church. Candles cast their dim light, which made the atmosphere forgiving and almost divine. He knelt and looked up at the altar, his thoughts finally quiet, lack of sleep causing his mind to drift. Hazily, he was aware of the figure of a priest walking quietly up to the altar and standing there, head bowed. Then he knew he was having another of his hallucinations. It seemed as though the priest had a long plait hanging down his back. Heero rubbed his eyes and fearfully looked again. It was still there. Either he had finally gone mad or that priest had a plait like Duo’s – a long, shining chestnut plait.

Heero pulled himself to his feet and very slowly approached the priest, his eyes fixed desperately on that much-loved hair, afraid it would vanish at any moment, as it did in all his visions before.

When he got close to the priest, the plait was still there. He reached out a trembling hand and gently laid his fingertips on the hair where it touched middle of the priest’s back. The man whipped round, hands up to protect himself, then stood perfectly still, his mouth open, staring.

"Heero?" he whispered.

"Duo, is it really you? Or have I lost my mind?" Heero stared into the violet eyes that haunted his dreams, afraid to move.

"Heero, you’re really here." Duo took a step forward and put up his hand to touch Heero’s face, staring into the cobalt blue eyes he had never thought to see again.

Both were too thin, their clothes shabby, skin and eyes dull from despair; each saw only his heart’s desire in front of him, unchanged, so much loved and longed for.

Heero turned his face to kiss Duo’s fingers. "I suppose I shouldn’t do that – you’re a priest, aren’t you," he asked sadly.

Duo didn’t answer, just staring at him.

"Do you still want me?" he asked suddenly.

"Want you? I’ve always wanted you. I love you – you know that. I never wanted anyone else in my life." Heero stared at Duo, his breath seeming caught in his throat.

Duo caught the end of the vestment he wore and pulled it from his neck, placing it gently on the altar. "I never wanted anyone else either, Heero. And I’m not going to make the mistake of letting you go this time." He took hold of Heero’s hand in a tight grip. "I haven’t got much to pack. Will you wait for me?"

Heero put his hand to his eyes, feeling the earth spiralling under his feet. Then looked again into Duo’s hopeful eyes, waiting for his answer.

He couldn’t speak, just nodded and smiled and smiled, tears flooding his eyes.

"My place – it isn’t much……." he managed to get out.

"Our place, huh?" Duo pulled on his hand, grinning the old crazy grin, and Heero followed after him, clutching the end of Duo’s braid with his other hand, just in case the dream should try to escape him again.
