DragonRose Dragon Genetics

Genetics Lesson #1: These Genetics were completely made up from scratch, by me. I know enough about genetics to figure out how to make this work.. but I can always get problems with my genetics working together. These Genetic codes have absolutely no holding on reality, except for the way that I mix/handle them. If you are into Genes, or know something that I am missing, feel free to give me some advice! :)

Below is a table that might change from time to time as I think of easier ways to portray these Genetic Codes. Everything should be seperated by Original Breed. If you want to figure out the genetic codes to a Sub Breed, you are going to have to figure it out yourself, or write to me if you can't figure it out, and I'll send you the codes via Email. There should also be an explaination below of how I mix genes.

You must know that I do not use the "Gene Table" (see below) when doing a Clutch for a Same Breed Pairing (Both parents are of the same breed). Because I created these Genetic codes with my own imagination, and the small amount of knowledge I remember from High School, I can get a lot of inconsistancies from Same breed Pairings. Like: Even though All Air Dragons eat Poultry, if I were to use the gene table, some of their children would only eat meat, and some would only eat greenery. Thus Changing their Genetics. Because of this, I will use the same genetics I created for the Original breeds for original bred children.

If you do not understand Genes, or have no idea what I'm talking about, I advise you ask your Science Teacher about it (if you are in school) or pick up a beginner's book on Genetics. (NOT Geneoligy. Geneoligy is the Study of Family Trees/Lines. Genetics is the study of the basic DNA that makes up every person.) I warn you though, Genetics can get VERY confusing, and even frusterating at times. I cannot explain genetics in a single Email.. so I'm not even going to try. If you have questions about these genetics, feel free to write me.. but I don't know if I'll be able to help. I will deffinitly try my best to help you out, however.

If you are still confused about my gene codes below, Write Me and I'll try to simplify everything for you.

Below is a list of all of my genetic codes, with a short description beside them. Each one - three letters means a specific trait in a Dragon. YES.. capitalization DOES matter. If a letter is small, that means that it is a rescive trait.. meaning that if it is mixed with a dominant (Big letter) trait, the smaller trait will not show as much/at all.

Below is a couple graphics that describe how I do the Genetics. I call this the "Genetic Table". It's actually quite simple if you understand the basic genetics behind it. :) I will explain each diagram below.

This First Diagram is what the "Genetic Table" should look like whenever you begin. You should draw a board that looks something like this. An easier method of doing this, is erase the box around the lines.. what do you get? A Tic-Tac-Toe board! By using the Tic-Tac-Toe Board, it makes it easier to draw. (If there are more than 2 letters per genetic code, you will have to add one more column/row to this box.)

Secondly, You take two genetic codes from two Dragons. They should be from the same catagory (Food, Color, Body Type, etc). I decided to use "color" for my genetic code. In order to create a code for an entire dragon, you will need to do this to ALL of the catagories between the two dragon breeds.

First of all, you put the first Genetic from either of the dragons in the first box on the top. Then the second genetic from the same code goes into the second box. Repeat with the other dragon's code, only going downward on the left side. Leave the Box in the top left Corner empty. It should look something like this:

(I chose the Colors of Green/green(Gg) from Dragon #1 and White/white(Ww) from Dragon #2 to makes things kinda simple.)

The third step is to take the first top, and the first left boxes, and combine their codes. W Mixes with G to become WG (White/Green), and so on. Repeat with the rest of the boxes. It should look something like this:

Now is when you get into the complicated explaination. By having four boxes of new colors, you now have a 25% Chance of your babies having one of those colors. It's a completely random thing. If you have Four babies, then the First baby could have WB, the Second could have Wb, the Third could have wB, and the Fourth could have wb. Notice that I used the word COULD, not would. As this is a completely random choosing, You could end up with 3 babies that are WB, and 1 that is wB, or something along those lines. I try to even my genetic out between the babies.

Something slightly more complicated. If you have a mixed genetic code (as in two different letters. GW instead of GG), then you also need to check which letter is Capitalized. If both letters are Large (WG), or small (wg) Then the dragon will have both of those colors. If One letter is Large and the other is small (Wg, or wG) then the dragon will be the Larger color. It may have spots of the smaller color.. but it will be mainly the Larger color. This also goes for Food, Clutches, Eggs, and every other genetic catagory I've created. If you are unsure as to what you have created, check the chart at the top of the page for what each code means.

Now for something else to add to your thoughts. If you noticed that some of my genetics have 3 letters to them, this is how you get Those to come out with 3 letters! (confused yet?)

First, you take the box, again... only you make 7 boxes on the top, and 3 going down.

Then you take the three genetic code (RBy) and you place it in the boxes on top, minus the first box, as usual. The first three codes you leave as single letters. The last three you change into double letters. (R|B|y|RB|Ry|By) Then you put the two letter genetic (Go) in the lower boxes like normal, with only one letter per box.

Then you mix the genetics like above. Whenever you get to the double genetics, you simply take the two genetics, and add it to the single genetic, in order to get a 3 genetic code. (see below)

Ok.. well.. if that didn't confuse you enough, you then follow the above steps for figureing out what genetic each child will have. Because of the increase in genetic possibilities... There is now a 1 out of 12 chance that each baby will have one of these codes, instead of 1 out of 4.

Fun, Huh?? I hope that wasn't too confusing for you!! :) I love genetics.. so if you know something I don't.. feel free to tell me, and I will be more than happy to learn from YOU! :D
