We have taken and translated this Psalm from the Hebrew. Its function is to demarcate the time when the fellowship is no longer ordinary and begin to take on their roles for this rite. The realm of the ritual is a symbolic world. That is, each act and word means something more abstract. This is a time when we express what is otherwise inexpressible. These symbols will speak to the heart of the covenant.
We expect that the fellowship has bathed and is already clean. The Lavabo is not about physical cleanliness, but of spiritual foci. The ceramic basin represents the physical cauldron, that part of our natures that is physical.
Another aspect of this part of the rite is to lay down our worries. The concerns of the ordinary world are left behind. No need to worry, though, they may be retrieved later. Who knows, they may not be so bad later.
We will fill the basin with “Magic” water. This is water that exists only in the imagination of the fellowship. This first symbolic event combines the physical components of the basin and the hands with the metaphysical component of the mind. The hands are the microcosm of the body, as are the ears and feet. Washing them represents the cleaning of the whole.
The Priest and Priestess, Magister and Hand Maiden, Guardian, and Quarter Masters will gather at the center of the circle. They will “wash” their hands in a ceramic bowl with “Magic” water in it. As they wash their hands, they will cease to be who they were, and will become their roles.
I wash my palms in purity.
I wash my hands of the world vulgar.
I will approach the divine with joy
And walk about the place of your altar, Jahwa†.
I make heard with a voice of thanksgiving,
And account for all your wonders, Jahwa.
I love dwelling in your house,
And will rise in the habitation of honor.
I will raise up my soul, and become A God!
