So Your Buying a Dragon?
Bearded dragons require spatious terrariums.  The one pictured above houses two adults.  It is 4' long, 2 1/2' tall and 2' wide.  Many beardie owners argue over the size issue.  Some would say that this is an acceptable size while others might not.  I have found this to be an
to be an excellent sized cage for my pair.  They are very healthy, happy, and never object!  If you are starting out with a baby dragon, a 29 gallon tank will do temporarily.  Babies grow very fast and will soon become stressed in small environments.  Aggression could even occur if you have several individuals!  You may obtain a dragon cage at a local pet store, however, i wouldn't recommend it.  You can make one at home quite easily and for a mere fraction of the price!  The cage shown above was hand made by a friend of mine.  It would probably have cost me several hundred dollars if i had bought this at a store for retail value.  Even if you don't have any carpentry skills, you most likely know someone who does!  So look around before you buy!

Substrates And Decorations
Many different types of substrates may be used for your terrarium.  I've chosen playground sand that you can obtain from any hardware store.  This is easily sifted (for feces and other material) and retains heat well (an added bonus is that it is very attractive if used as a desert scene!)  Make sure, though, that your beardie does not injest too much sand because it may cause intestinal blockages.  I havn't had any problems with this.  Do not use bark or wood shavings.  These can cause problems when ingested and can raise the humidity levels to a dangerous point.  Decorations may include a variety of things.  One required element is logs.  Your dragon must have atleast two logs in the cage.  Place one under the heat light for a pleasant basking spot.  Do not overcrowd the cage with logs and other such decor.  If you like, you can even add fake plants to add bit more color to your set up.  Rocks, sand, plants, caves, and logs are all great decorations to add to your dragon's new home!
