Piasa (North America) the Algonquin indians worshipped a dragon with the face of a man and a tail that was twice a mans height. O-Gon-Cho (Japan) A white dragon that lived in a deep pond at Yamashiro. Every 50 years it rises and flies as a golden feathered bird. Its howl warned of impending disaster. Ethiopian Dream (Africa) it had four wings and clawed feet, it was big enough to kill elephants. It also ate poisoned plants to make its bite more deadly. Tarasque (France) half fish, half animal, it lived in a forest near the Rhone river. It sank boats and devoured the passengers. Amphisbaena (Africa) a dragon with a head at both ends, so it could travel in either direction. Jormungandr (Norwegian) A dragon so long it sleeps with its tail in its mouth, its body encircling the world. At the end of the world it will wake up and be killed by Thor signaling Ragnarok. Tiamat (Mesopotamia/Babylon)She was a huge dragon representing Chaos. From her union with Apsu, the first gods were created. Their descendents began to irritate them, so Tiamat and Apsu decided to kill them. Ea discovered the plan and killed Apsu. Tiamat grew angry and created an army of monsters. She was eventually killed by Marduk. He cut her in half, made her top half the sky and her lower half the earth, and from her tears, he created the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. (Babylonian creation myth) Apep (Egypt)Egyptian chaos demon. Every night he attacked Ra, the sun god on his nightly travels. Every night he was slain, but could not be killed. The Egyptians performed rituals to aid Ra in his nightly travels. Typhon (Greece)The youngest son of Gaia and Tartarus, he was described as a monster with a hundred dragon heads. He was defeated by Zeus and imprisoned under Mount Etna. He is thought to be the cause of her eruptions.
