DVD Edge-9 Copy-Protection Project
During the development of DVD. The Consortium questioned if DVD-Video will be playable on computers. They concluded that it must be because it was designed for its versatility. The decision made DVD vulnerable to hackers. In 1999, DVD Jon has broken the CSS (Content Scrambling System) code that made DVD's easier to copy. Since then "illegal" DVD-copying became casual. Foreign shows became dominant, distribution are by means of VCDs and DVDs. The street price of a pirated pressed DVD is only $1.15 (US) with only 15 cents as a capital per disc. In 2002, Asian Media developed a copy-protection for VCDs but this format is becoming obsolete. The following year they experimented DVDs that is unreadable on DVD-ROM just like what they did in VCDs. These past three years, DVD Edge-9 project became on and off because of unsatisfactory results. They also noticed the behavior of some traders, they tend to avoid copy-protected VCDs. They want to share or perhaps trade it again to another person. The last week of February made satisfying results. The experimental disc is unreadable on DVDDecrypter by LightningUK. Edge-9 will prevent DVD/FAB Decrypter to defeat the CSS code (The screenshot features "hanged" DVDDecrypter while reading the Edge-9 protected disc, this is only a simulation because they can't obtain a DLT.
and unshrinkable...

On March 9, 2006 (Edge Day) this project is officially working and continually tested on different DVD players. Probably it will not work on first generation *DVD players (DVD ONLY players) and the PS2 console but it is compatible on PC DVD-Rom and the Xbox. This project is open to all DVD authorities who want to see further improvement on copy-protection.
Features

- *Prevents 1:1 image copying by protecting the CSS code.
- Playable on most *DVD players from year 2001 to present and DVD-ROM drives.

How piracy works?
- Sources
Sources may come from "unloyal" employees from theaters, game/movie/music production houses and software publishers who received copies in advance before the retail/play date. These individuals may have contacts with "Sceners" or "Street Pirates".
"Sceners" - term for Internet groups releasing copyrighted material that are available for download. For movies they release DVD images, rips and footage from theaters. notable groups for movies are Centropy, Replica and Diamond. For the complete list of "Sceners" please go to http://www.nforce.nl. On the other hand, street piracy or sometimes called "HK Silvers" are preying for "scene-releases" then forward it to pressed media duplicators. Street Piracy are rumored to be funded by drug syndicates or politicians, that is why they remain 'untouchables'. Pirated pressed factories are located in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines and Cuba. The finish pirated products are exported around the world and sold in the street with complete cases and 'eye-candy' covers for only a dollar. Some sellers even knocks at doorsteps in Europe.
